I am thinking of releasing the Egg Crate with a dual 18mm and single 24mm for the new E12 interchangeable mounts, instead of 2 and 3 engine clusters like the original.

Thoughts?

Carl-

The purest (sp?) in me says stay true to the original kit, but I suspect most others would opt to go with the 24mm mount addition.

Since the original had a removable mount, could the 24mm be offered as an 'option' and the base kit issued like the original with the choice to do a 2 or 3 engine 18mm cluster?

My thoughts.

Earl

P.S. Some months back I sent a scan of the original Egg Crate decal to you via email. Don't know if you received or not (can resend), but also see that 'Gus' recently posted having hi res scans also. Let us know if needed.

Thanks for working on this kit!

How about 2x18mm, 3x18mm and 1x24mm interchangable motor mounts?

That should make everyone happy. :D

Oh, wait. The HPR folks will want 29mm and 38mm motor mounts. However, remember at the currrent time the 38mm motor mount version will exceed California model rocket regulations. ;)

Carl,

Sounds Good. Also will you be using balsa transitions in place of the paper transitions? I am now imagining using a cluster of Aerotech 18mms and then using the 24/40 or even 24/60 to really give it a ride. :)

Excellent, 18mm cluster and 24mm interchangeable. Would certainly purchase.

I agree with the dual 18mm and 24mm option. Provides equal or better thrust without the issues of clustering.

I'm fine with the dual 18mm / single 24mm interchangeable. Purist can always "convert" the kit to a permanent 3x18mm.

Dual 18mm mount allows total impulse of A-D.

24 mm mount (I'm presuming 3 3/4" capable) allows C-E.

Triple 18 mm mount made sense before 24mm motors but not so much now.

Great variety of impulse for a great rocket.

I would rather it be 3x18 and 1x24 if only two mounts.
The 3x18 is the original and that seems to be a MUST.
2x18mm has NEVER made any sense to me since the advent of the modern 24mm D12.

The original had a 2 or 3 engine mount arrangement. Parts were included for your choice of one of those two. Additional parts had to be ordered to build the second mount. Since the three 18mm tubes are larger than the ID of the ST-16, they used a friction fit for the mounts using masking tape.

Providing all the parts to do three mounts (dual 18, triple 18, and single 24) would probably price the kit too high. It did for the SLS Brighton with the three included mounts. The costs for the mounts are:

3 18mm mount $7.00
2 18mm mount $5.10
1 24mm mount $3.55

Base cost of kit without mounts is about $23.00, so a single 24mm mount version would be $26.55 and one with all three mounts would be about $38.00. From past experience, we would sell less than a hundred if it cost $38.00.

The single 24mm base with optional 2 and 3 cluster mounts is looking better all the time!

I'll buy the Egg Crate kit however you decide to produce it, Carl.

I'd buy the optional motor mounts too. ;)

Carl's Idea sounds best here...
I'd buy the optional 3x18 and probably would fly most on a 1x24.

I've taken the scans that Gus posted and fixed the Egg Crate decal but... since Carl is going to reproduce the kit which will have decals provided and since I know Carl can't reproduce white, (Carl and I have discussed this) I will offer just the Egg Crate, I will be offering just the Egg Crate white eggs separately.

The full Egg Crate decal set will still be available but you will have the option of just ordering the "Eggs" only.

Anyone here rather have the ENERJET version of the Egg Crate instead ?
I personally like that one better.

I'd buy the 1 x 24mm base and probably fly that most the time. Possibly add a 18mm cluster if it is interchangble.

I'll second that, of course I've built two of those already with all Semroc parts (Estes Capsule) but agree the EnerJet version is very cool too. I have an SLS upscale of that in RockSim that I plan to build ..... one day :o

I agree with Carl the 1 x 24mm base rocket but offer with optional 2 and 3 cluster mounts for those that choose to go the cluster route.

Personally I would probably only use the 1 x 24mm mount.

Hey Carl-
Any chance of that Enerjet Athena clone coming ?

I suppose that you should not have the issue with Estes-Cox on this bird since the trademark was abandoned in 2009 - at least that is the entry in Justia.

I like the idea of the 24MM mount with options. If you launch it, I will buy it with a scheduled build date of 2018. I have a substantial SEMROC backlog.
