What is a VF-261?

First to identify this early rocket that is being released at NSL2007 will get one!

Hints:

1. One of the most recognized rockets that was never in production in any scale.

2. Much earlier than the Launch Logo rocket!

3. Not a Semroc design.

Three day weekend. Placed a Semroc order. Flirted with Carl's Wife. AVI vaporware. Tag Powell's company.

Zee little gray cells are tired.

Lets see: No one wants the Tau Zero. Okay, way to go Idaho! No, while I'd hoped to have the instructions submitted to Carl and Co. by this time, it seems that the guy who was going to WRITE THE INSTRUCTIONS (cough, cough) has hit a roadblock or two. :o Like a kitchen remodel project for the last six weeks THAT ISN'T DONE YET!

I'm thinking it's Craig McGraw's "Stryker" kit. ;) :p

Jupiter-C?

The vehicle consists of a modified Redstone ballistic missile with two solid-propellant upper stages. The tanks of the Redstone were lengthened by 8 ft (2.4 m) to provide additional propellant.

The Vanguard? or the Juno I?

The Vanguard rocket was intended to be the first satellite launch vehicle of the United States. It was used by Project Vanguard from 1957 to 1959. The Vanguard was developed and rushed into service during the Cold War to compete with the Soviet Sputnik program. In response to the surprise launch of Sputnik 1, the U.S. quickly used a Juno I to orbit Explorer I, making Vanguard I the second U.S. orbital launch.

But these were in production at full scale!

Jay,

Carl's not up yet, working on instructions for this one early this morning. Hate to keep everyone guessing when you got it right.

If that's it then Gus and CenturiGuy are both right. It's the same rocket!

Sorry Jay...I'd say Gus got it first!

Judges could we get a ruling here?

Since Gus isn't going to NSL I can pick it up for him. :D

Carl, Sheryl,

That's a great rocket!

Jay won fair and square, but if I remember right the consolation prize in all Semroc contests is that you get to have your friend Sandman pick up 2 kits for you at NSL. ;)

I'm a total sucker for any rocket with a boat-tail and fin pods. And oddly enough, I found a great picture of just such a rocket on one of my favorite websites. (http://www.semroc.com/Store/scripts/RocketKits.asp?SKU=KA-10)

Let me see if I can read the fine print with my electron microscope to see if you get those two NSL kits for *free*...

It figures. Just placed an order Monday and they are waiting for the long tube boxes to ship it. I have an FSI OSO in the bag. I'll have to get the VF-261 at a later date. Too many choices anymore (ruefully shaking head while staring at credit card account...)

Nice! I'm a sucker for retro-sci-fi rocketships, and the history of it being on the '61 catalog makes this one a must-have - ordered it today. Did Vern draw the cover of this catalog? Way to figure it out Jay! So, I guess I'll need to watch Destination Moon now too...

"So, when can we expect an SLS VF-261"?

What is a VF-261?

First to identify this early rocket that is being released at NSL2007 will get one!My boss plunked a SEMROC box down on my desk at work today and said, "The final component for your bomb is here."  :p

I took it home, opened it up, and was speechless to discover the production number.

Let's just say it's going in my (very small) box of "keeper" kits that I won't be building. ;) :D
