View Full Version : My first clone

Well, after an 18-year absence from the hobby, I'm diving back in with a vengeance. 8 new kits purchased, and I'm picking up an order from Totally Tubular tonight.
One of those new kits had it's body tube in pretty sorry shape, but the shop owner gave me a full 18" section of tube to replace it. Seeing as I can't stand the boring old 4 fins and a nose cone designs, I've decided to use the parts of this kit to attempt my first full clone.
Below is a picture of someone else's normal build of the kit. Anyone care to guess what I'm building?

Well, that's a Venom. Are you building a Spacemaster? Argosy?

USSF Fireflash?
Skytracer?
X-16?
World Federation Star probe?
Falcon Comander?
Argosy?
Spacemaster?
Starhawk?
Soaring Eagle?
I think that about covers them all. I love that nose cone, and so many cool kits were built using it. The USSF Fireflash is my personal favorite from that list and was my first clone.

Actually not correct, my first was of coarse the Der Red Max, but the fireflash was my second.

As an aside, the venom is the only kit using that nosecone that doesn't have its plans online somewhere. Perhaps you should scan it and send it in.
I wonder if estes still has the mold for that cone too?

The Venom looked to me like an Estes attempt to rid themselves of their old stock of this cone. Not exactly a well thought out rocket.

Ryan,
Actually, these plans are posted, they're just not on YORP or ZimZ... :(
...Meaning, if anyone happens to have a copy of Estes #2140 Venom, please send it ASAP to Scott or Buzz... :D
It's up on the A. Shasta pages:

They're not the best scans, not at all like the ones JimZ or YORP has, but right now it's better than nothing... :(

Being a fairly recent recruit to this forum I guess I just plain missed this thread before.
Plans for the Venom??? Not really needed...it's just 4 fins and the nose cone.
It does have through the wall fins! Kinda neat for Estes.
I actually have about 40 venom kits left. I bought a whole bunch of bulk packs...I just couldn't pass 'em up! ;)
I replaced the Agosy/Spacemaster nose cones with just plain PNC-50 cones and I sell 'em to the kids in rocketry classes for $2 or $3 each. They build fairly fast for kids.
Here is a "small" grouping of my fleet, mixed in with the "clones" are a few scratch built ones..
I have more.
OK...I admit it...I'm showing off but...isn't that basically why we're here? :D

Oooohh....nice Snoopers.....
40 extra Venom kits, eh? Care to part with a couple of those (with the PNC-50SP of course)?

Nice looking clone of the Estes Skytracer.
Agreed :-)
always wanted one of those, so I guess one more clone to add to the list.
got a few tech questions on that one .
1) leads to the cone would be nice, I know moldin oldies has it, but original would be good .
2) the nozzle parts set ( estes # VF-S1), is this the same as the Centuri Quasar, SST shuttle, etc ( as on the aforemention 'oldies' site ?
thanks again for the help !

Al,
I got my nose cone from an Estes Venom. If you look around, you can still find one at the occasional older hobby shop.
As for the tail cones, I'm still trying to figure how to do those. I've heard that they are the same part from the Centuri SST. Since I just ordered one, I'll let you know when it arrives in the next few days.

The two tall rockers are the same as the Centuri SST or the Quasar. You can get the parts for this from Moldin Oldies as will as the nose cone. The parts from Moldin Oldies may need some work before they can be put together in the design on the rocket for they are solid.

I see this pic was taken during your LJ II run. Mine is still on the shelf waiting to be built when time permits. Just want to make sure I won't be rushed and build it up nice!
