Not finalized but I'm going to try and spend the week. Haven't got any competitions in this year so I'm not sure. Maybe my setion can use the points if I just get flight points. I do want to see some sport launches this year though.....Apollo Pad Abort gonna be there ;) ?

I wish I could go, but can't. :( Used all my vacation time up.
Planning to be there with my daughter for the week. :D
Will try to launch the Pad Abort One for the Imagination Celebration and will hopefully get Sandman to send up Pad Abort Two at the same event.

I hope I can go. It all depends on business, the economy, the price of gas (it's a 14 hr drive!).
We'll see.

I know what you mean on all counts. I'll have to see as the time gets closer. Vacation time is available and that will help. Got a buddy from the days of the last original Nemroc conventions that expressed interest in going, so I will likely not be able to make the full week. Darn, I'll miss the O.R. Reunion.
Time and bucks (or lack thereof!) will tell.

Kathy and I will be there with our FlisKits booth. Trying to figure out what I want to do for the Imagination Celebration :)
Should be a good week! (but a busy one.) We will have 3 out of state events in a 5 week span, concluding with NARAM...

I for one hope Fliskits will be unveiling yet another earth-shattering new kit release at NARAM. Another scale (or sportscale) kit would be way past fantastic.

Is not just getting in the flying at one of the best locations in the East, but the ability to visit both the Fliskits and Semroc booths side by side, and having Vern & Gleda there is always fun!
This shot is with Gleda Estes, Scott Branche of Rockitflite fame and myself from Naram 46 in 2004 hanging out in the Fliskits booth. This is what makes the long travel worthwhile!

Clearly at some point we'll need to set up a meetup for YORF (and TRF) members.
Otherwise I'll be wandering around wondering who everybody is (except for Vern and Gleda Estes; Carl, Sheryl, and Bruce McLawhorn; Jim Flis; and Scott Branche, all of whom I'd probably recognize even though I've never seen any of them in person except the McLawhorns at NARCON 2006).
And yes, I'm 50 years old and just used the neologism "meetup."

Good idea.
I know a lot of names from old, and have met some at the last TARC launch. But, I do not , and have not, met poeple, simply because, for Many Years was a solo flier, or flew with one buddy who was interested.

Don't forget, the Rocket Doctor will be there along with the semroc crew and Vern and Gleda, and I will have a few special items to launch as well.

Queston for the NARAM veterans. If one were planning on attending but couldn't be there for the whole week which is the better end, July 26-29 or July 30-August 1?

July 26-27th is the Sport Flying weekend. No competition, very friendly and much more layed back...much more fun, meet people, look at cool stuff, BS, brag...
Vern and Gleda traditionall don't show up until usually the middle of the week.
That's my 2 cents.

I'd recommend the first end, especially this year. Wednesday is an off-day and Friday is typically a short day so you'd only have 1 1/2 days of flying if you came for the second half of the week.
Saturday and Sunday is two full days of sport flying. Plus you've got the Old Rocketeer's Reunion going on Saturday night, if you're into that sort of thing. The contest starts on Monday and the sport range is open as well.
The one thing that Friday has going for it is that the scale models fly on Friday. You can get a look at them, though, on Sunday night when they're turned in for judging. There's the Awards Banquet on Friday night, but that can be pretty dull, even for hard-core competitors who are getting lots of trophies.
Some other things that tend to be early in the week are the NAR Auction, where you can bid on all sorts of collectable stuff, and the Manufacturers' Forum. I suspect that the auction will have some interesting stuff this year with the ORR and all.
It's a good time, no matter how long you can stay.

Thanks John and Sandman I appreciate your help.
I think I'll try and attend July 26-29, mainly because of the various events that you both listed happening during that time period including; the sport flying on Sat/Sun, the Old Rocketeers Reunion Saturday night, the auction and manufacturers forum. Plus just looking at "cool stuff" which is right up my alley. :)
I really would like to be able to meet or at least see Vern and Gleda but it sounds like they may come in on the 30th so that's probably not likely unless I extend the stay by a day. Unlikely but you never know.

If they are there you will meet them.
You'll never get turned down for an autograph or a friendly chat.
Tip* Be sure to bring a Sharpie pen and pick a model you like, a classic preferably, and something you will never fly again. They'll be happy to sign it.
Gleda asked me once, "Why would you want me to sign your rocket?"
Gleda holds the duration record for boost glider with the Astron Spaceplane. When they changed the rules to not allow the motor to be ejected they locked in her record in perpituity.

The Sunday night turn-in isn't really intended for "viewing", and they do tend to shoo away gawkers a bit. The real viewing is Thursday night, when the models are set back out, with static scores, usually sorted from best to not-so-best. This affords a couple hour window for public to see the models before the modelers cast their fate into the winds Friday ad actually fly the beautiful creations.

I know, but if he's not going to be around for the Thursday night viewing, that'd be the only chance. It can get pretty hectic down there, but I would suspect that if he stayed out of the way and didn't touch the models, nobody would have a problem. Over the years, I've done my share of milling about the scale room scoping out the competition after I or my teammates have turned in our entries and have only been asked to leave once the turn-in period had ended. That was a year that I turned in the model with less than five minutes to spare and had barely finished filling out the paperwork when the judges made the announcement.

I've made reservations and entered for the Contests and ORR. I'm working on rockets that I'll try out before hand at the Alamagordo Regional in June. Should be a great time. I haven't been to one since NARAM-2 and 3 in Colorado. The skinny kid with eye glasses in the plaid shirt is me.

Mike, that's great!
I'll bet that I haven't seen the names of more than 10 or 15 NAR members with numbers lower than 1000, and now I've seen one more.

I wish I could find a few other guys from that time. Steve Kushner comes to mind. He got me started. Bill Roe was our mentor, but he has passed on.

I just registered for the weekend sport flying and the ORR. Booked a suite in Chantilly, VA just minutes from the Udvar Hazy Center and I 66. Marriot Town place suites, $67 per night with a AAA discount. Rooms include full kitchen and internet. Four Points and the sport range are about 10-20 minutes away, respectively. Should be fun!

Looks like you scored a sweet deal! I'm Marriott platinum, AAA, etc. and can't get a rate anywhere near that. Must be a weekend deal, versus the full week I'm staying.

We have a weekday thrown in there too, staying Thursday 24th and check out Sunday by 12PM.
My wife booked it last night. I think she said she went through Hotels.com which showed a price $74 a night, and it also allowed her to add the AAA discount which brought it down to $67. I was quite surprised she was able to get something that cheap, especially with having the full kitchen, which might also save us few bucks on a meal or two if we eat in. I noticed the weekday rates have been higher at most places, which I suppose is typical for a metro area. Backwards from what I'm used to, since most hotels I grew up around and have stayed in have been in resort areas.
