Weather permitting, it looks like I might actually get to fly this coming weekend. Tonight I took a quick inventory to see what I've got built that needs flying for review. The sadistic among you will enjoy this list.
1. Astron Raceman - My Richard Petty homage from about four years back. This one will probably be a 1/2A6-2, A8-3, B6-4 trio of motors.
2. Inflight WASP - Extremely new and one that I'm pumped about flying.
3. Semroc Centaur - I bought the 3M adhesive on Friday night, then decided to fly it as it is to get an idea if the paper is necessary.
4. Semroc Golden Scout - Unfortunately not #666.
5. Semroc Saki Bomb - Depending how much time I get to finish it.
6. Estes National Aerospace Plane - With new 24mm engine mount.
7. Sunward Galactic Wave - This time with nose weight. Last time it wiggled badly.
8. Sunward Gravity Rider - 2x18mm cluster.
9. Estes Der Red Max - Bought on Friday. Finished today.
10. PDR U.S.S. Atlantis - Final sanding and paint needed, but could fly nekkid.
11. PDR Starlab - Ditto.
12. Estes D.A.R.T. - Anyone have any calliope music I can borrow for the flying clown?
13. FSI Viking - The BMS clone of the month.
14. Estes Wildfire - Just need to stick on the decals.
15. Goonybird Missile Toe -
16. Goonybird Star Snoop -
17. Goonybird Zoom Broom -
18. Goonybird Galaxy Guppy - all 18mm clones.
19. Mega Missile Toe -
20. D.O.M. Argus II -
I'm going to be a busy boy. This isn't even all of them. I just got tired of typing. I'm pretty sure I'll pick and choose my favorites, but some of these have been around for a while.

Bill, I'll let you know what number I get, hopefully this week. I ordered two of them on Saturday.

How did you get any finishing done? It's been raining all weekend and the humidity has been out the roof! I figured the Cincy area was just as wet as we are.

Bill, how about your SWAT-based clustered Satellite Interceptor, what's the status on it? :)

Sprayed it between showers, then brought it in to dry. I haven't had any problems.

<snip long list>Pictures, Bill, we need pictures. Lists are for the grocery store :)

That said, I do the same thing before a launch. It's a good form of stress management (not that hobbies for relaxation are supposed to cause stress  ).

:o Sorry. Dad's in the hospital. I'll try to get pics tomorrow.
I should also add that I've got the World Federation Star Probe clone flyable and just needing some detail parts. Has anyone ever done any work on the decal scan for this one?

Thanks, guys. He's out, but not doing terribly well. (He had his gall bladder removed and there was some infection that delayed the recovery.) He's running my Mom a bit ragged, so I'm trying to talk her into going out and doing something and letting me come down and sit with him for an evening. So far she won't bite, but I'll keep working on her. ;)

Well, let's begin with the kites. Yesterday was Kite Fest at VOA. They wanted to cancel our launch, but this was a scheduled regional, the Capricorn V. Instead we were put out to pasture away from the kites.

To give you an idea of the size of these things, the Octopus kite was 95' long from head to tail. Not sure which one it was, but one of the kites that was flying was reported to have cost $18,000. (The house I grew up in cost $14,500, just to put things in perspective.)

My first flight was Der Big Red Max on an E9-6. I got distracted with some of the Capricorn V details while loading it up, so when it left the pad with E9-6 authority, I was among those impressed and surprised.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/DerBigRedMaxE9-6lift-offQUARKLaunch.jpg

Got a HUGE drift on recovery, right over into the heart of kite country where it was avoided like a fresh dog load.

First flight of the Inflight WASP. This has been a very impressive kit, one that I can highly recommend. (He's got a Blue Bird Zero kit that I'm going to try next.)

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/InflightWASPonpadQUARKLaunchApril52.jpg

High, straight flight and huge recovery drift, but landed a few feet away from another QUARKer whose rocket had recovered in the same spot on a previous rack. Kept me from a long walk.

Five of the eight flights I made on Saturday were first flights. The BMS Clone of the Month Viking 1 was among those. Another very cool kit and I'm looking forward to Bill's next offering.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/QUARKLaunchApril52008033.jpg

Can't find the launch shot.
Anyway, the flight was high and arrow straight on a C11-7. It started drifting and I thought it was gone. I started walking and noticed a parachute whipping around on the ground over in the kite area. I thought it was just part of one of the kites, but there was a lady standing next to it waving to me and pointing to it. Turns out she was as curious about the rockets as I was about the kites. Her husband was flying one that he paid $1200 for and she just smiled when I asked her about the $18,000 rumor.

Semroc Centaur. I was kind of nervous about this one.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/SemrocCentauronpadQUARKLaunchApril5.jpg

I've never flown a two-stage model that had the passport staging that the Semroc Centaur has. It seemed like the two stages fit together awfully tight, so I did some sanding. It still seemed tight. I took it to the pad once, but got drafted for tracking duty for the Capricorn V competition. I decided against trying it, then remembered what I used to tell my brother in law in the old days; God hates a coward.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/SemrocCentaurlift-offQUARKLaunchApr.jpg

Yeah, he hates a coward, but he's partial to wimps, so I went wimpy. B6-0 to A8-5, even though I had C6-0 to C6-7 in my arsenal. The rocket staged at around 100' (before I even lowered the camera, and topped out just as I turned to look. I clearly heard the sound of a collision between the sustainer and payload section at ejection.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/SemrocCentaurlandingQUARKLaunchApri.jpg

I was expecting damage, expecially when something obviously fell away after the impact, but it was the engine casing. Turns out there was some damage, but not like I'd feared.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/SemrocCentaursustainerfindamageQUAR.jpg

The fin on the right is shattered somewhat, (leading edge just to the right of the joint,) but the joint held. Pretty impressive. Next time, NO MERCY! :D

Dragged out an oldie for the next flight, the Mega Missile Toe that I needed to fly for review.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/MegaMissileToeonpadQUARKLaunchApril.jpg

This was one of my earlier Goony upscales, so it only has wimpy C11-D12 capability. (The E9 flights are WAY cooler.) Still a pretty cool performer, mostly because of the oddity of it all.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/MegaMissileToelift-offQUARKLaunchAp.jpg

Flight was on a C11-5 and was kind of low, but straight. Then at ejection the "First Aid Kit" tube got tied up with the Kevlar.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/MegaMissileToerecoveryQUARKLaunchAp.jpg

Recovery was a short walk, shortest of the day to that point.

Next came the regular Goonybird Zoom Broom.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/GoonybirdZoomBroomQUARKLaunchApril5.jpg

No chute. Nose blow recovery. This bird has been given some nose weight since the last time it flew and I needed another flight for review. I chose a B6-4 and was pretty impressed with the altitude.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/GoonybirdZoomBroomlift-offQUARKLaun.jpg

It fluttered out of the sky down to the wet, soft grass. No problems with the recovery. Kinda funny how much ejection gunk flew up into the nose cone. (Most of the recovery wadding. )

I've still got two flights to talk about, but my daughter wants the computer to look at purses or America's Next Top Model or Webkinz. I'll get to them later. ;)

My next to last launch was my newly re-powered Estes National Aerospace Plane on a D12-7.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/NationalAerospacePlaneonpadQUARKLau.jpg

I originally built this with a stock 18mm mount while at the same time replacing the balsa with basswood. :o Mistake? You bet. It clawed its way to a max altitude of 250' on a C6-5, wiggling all the way. I pulled the 18mm mount and put in a 24mm. This solved the power problem, but not the shake. It got plenty high on the D12-7.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/NationalAerospaceplanelift-offQUARK.jpg

I guess nose weight is the next project. And paint. :o

Finally, the Astron Spaceman variant that I call the Astron Raceman. (Richard Petty for those of you who weren't raised with stock car racing when it was worth watching.) I tossed this together for an EMRR contest a few years ago, but never bothered to fly it until yesterday.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s286/Wallyum/AstronRacemanQUARKLaunchApril52008.jpg

I loaded it with a B6-4 and fired it up. I was shocked at how quickly it left the pad and missed the launch shot completely. It got up pretty high, but the ejection charge still sounded like a shotgun. King Richard fluttered at first, then began falling head first, missing the road by only a few feet. He still launched and arm on impact, but should fly again after repairs. This is one my niece and nephew will love at B6-4 Field when it dries.

Was he driving a Pony-ack or a Dodge? <vbg>

...

When I turned on my first Winston Cup race (since the 79 Daytona 500), it was 1985 or 86, and Dale Sr was "frammin' and bammin'" with Geoff Bodine at North Wilkeboro, IIRC. I was immediately hooked. For a long time I lamented not having followed the sport more closely in the 70's, but in hindsight I think I got to see it in its best years from the mid-80's to the mid-90's. It's kinda over-sanitized for my likin' nowadays, and maybe has too many cookie-cutter tracks.

When they took away points for Dale Jr's cursing a while back, I was seriously put off.

He was drivin' a Plymouth back when I took an interest. Before that he'd also driven an Olds and a Ford. After that he drove Buicks and even "Chivvys".
Lately I've been approaching things like this. I see one of the commercials that they're running during the races and think "Would Cale Yarborough have done something like this?" In the case of some of the current Kasey Kahne commercials, NO WAY! That's just creepy.
