Where Centuri's ESS Raven and the Estes Interceptor collide?

Incurably curious,

(Who thinks the "Nike and Flare Patriots" from the 1974 AVI catalog look *very* familiar... but can't remember which one he had "back in the day")

I see more Quest Intruder than anything else.

(but then again, the Intruder is obviously inspired by the Interceptor, so ....)

I like the fact that this one uses E and F power instead of the much more common B-C power used by both the Centuri Super Kit and the Astron Interceptor

As for myself I would love to get a copy of the Plans, Decals, and Fin paterns for this rocket or get it from Ye Olde Rocket Shoppe/

I believe that rocket was one of AVI's many "vaporware" kits. I've never seen one other than in the catalog.

I Thank it was Scott at Ye Olde Rocket Shoppe that told me hr saw one fly yerars ago at a local Launch.

based on the photo, and the known BT diameter, it would not be too tough to create a 'Phantom Clone' . Lemme see what I can work up with rocsim and a calculator.

And... it would not be the first time I created a set of decals based on a photo... ;)

Go for it, Fred! I wouldn't mind having a somewhat larger Intruder-clonish sort of a thing. The Intruder's T-25 (25 mm) body tube is kinda small.

Is that 1.6" diameter in the AVI catalog the same as an Estes BT-60 at 1.637", or is it something else?

Couldn't be. I'm Scott of Ye Olde Rocket Shoppe. ;) I've never seen a kit, a built model or seen one fly. AVI was notorious for vaporware rockets.

Well, since this is a phantom... I am going with an ESTES BT060, 1.637"

Question: what would be a beter cone match for the pic?

The shorter 'Stormcaster' cone, or the longer Red Max PNC 60 AH?

OK, I have simmed up a version using PNC 60-AH. It looks pretty cool!!

Comments?

Since the catalog says it was supposed to be 1.6" in diameter, I'd say you made a good guesstimate. ;)

What? No .rkt file attached to the message?!? :D Looks good!

I'm going to be contacting you down the line for some upscale decals. I bought one of Sandman's handcrafted balsa drop nosecones.

I just found that I cannot post Rocsim files ... (acn we change that)

Anyway, if anyone wants it, I can email the file. It is Rocsim V7.01

I'll look at what I need to do to add that file extension to the system. In the meantime, you could just zip it as Craig has been doing with his designs.

And I just added rkt to the list of acceptable extensions so you can upload them directly if you wish from now on.

If the rocket uses an F moter would it not be a mid power rocket with a 29 MM motor mount.

Sorry Scott it must have been someone else, after 40 the mind starts to go.

Phred,

Don't you want to name it "Phantom Clone's Revenge"? That way, you get a word from each of the first 3 Episode titles. ;)

(Good God. Am I a dork for seeing that or what?) :D

I had to know the size and demotions of the rocket. So I scanned the picture of the rocket from the catalog and zoomed it up twice then divided the image into 4 parts. Each part would be 91/4” long once printed and taped together the rocket could be designed and the fin patterns could be made close as will as the decals from Excelsior Rocketry.

So here are the first three sections of the rocket.

Here is the fourth section or the tail of the rocket.

AVI used many strange sized motors... We cannot get 32mm motors anymore, so I decided to go with 24mm. I felt that this a 24mm mount offered the best all around range of motor choices. With a 24mm, you can fly anything from a C to a G.

How makes a 24 MM G motor.

Mid power G moters from aeroTech moters are 29MM, amd High Power are 29MM H motors.
Other High Power motor sizes are 38MM,54MM,75MM and 96MM.

Put thay do make a 24MM F motor.

Ellis Mountain makes a 34mm G37. I have several, and get them from Al's hobby shop:

I looked the catalog you posted put It dose not say the G-37 is a 24MM, are you sure its not a 29MM moter mount.

The Ellis Mountain G37 is definately a 24mm motor, and currently certified.
thier G35 is 29mm.

other 24mm G motors have been made in the past by Aerotech as follows: G42 (low end motor), G55 (nonstandard, white lightning), G70 (mid 80's low smoke) , G95 (early 80's,possibly full 160 nsec, never certified), G110 (non-standard,recently made with blue thinder propellent).

there have also been 24mm G motors by Vulcan systems (G200,G210), 22mm (fits old FSI motor tubes :-) - by ravenna research (oop) - also 22mm by DPS/Thunderflame (not certified).

I even have a US Rockets H100-12 in 24mm ( about 18" long moonburner, claimed to be a full 320 nsec)

ps: now, the real question is, why did AVI make those wierd 32mm motors anyways ?

The Ellis Mountain G37 is definately a 24mm motor, and currently certified. I'll second that. I have one. It's nearly identical to an AT G55.

Why are RC motors 32mm? / Why does AT make RC motors that are 32mm ?

well, Aerotech made the 32mm R/C motors for the simple reason that they can then use the endburners inside the casing - and have the entire 29mm casing as a liner / insulator .

anyone besides me notice that the F13 relaod liner is actually an F20/F10 casing ( same xx phenolic, same length, etc ), prone to burnthrough on long burn motors - have not seen many F10's , but MOST G10 single use were known to burm through, so it;s all about protecting the hardware - and maybe just a little about not wanting them haphazardly flown in 'regular rockets' ( ie: overweight )

I just stumbled onto this thread tonight. Apparently it originally appeared when we were in the midst of our move and I missed it. Did anything come of getting together a workable plan and decals? This looks like a pretty cool kit. Way too cool to let it die as vaporware.

You are right it is a way to cool of a rocket, put as for me I have been having to much trouble in the last couple of years to do anything about this rocket and I was also hoping the plans would be found and posted on Ye Olde Rocket Shoppe.
