I just put a link to this .pdf in another area of this forum but maybe someone else can use it.

I don't know whatever happened to Yitah Wu but I downloaded this file back in 1998 or 1999. I built one but I've never gotten around to painting it. I have flown it a few times though.

Maybe someone out there can tell us where Yitah might be these days. At any rate, stash this plan away in case you have a Mercury Capsule you want to fly on something other than a Redstone.

Moe,

If it's ok with you, I'd like to post this to either YORP or YORS at my next update. Thanks.

Absolutely...as long as full credit goes to Yitah Wu. If you mention "by way of" me, that's OK too.

Thank, Moe. Will do. What is your last name so I can give you proper credit?

That's very interesting Moe:
Built a not so detailed Little Joe-1, using the same 1-35th scale Estes Mercury Capsule years ago also.
Very glad to see someone had the good sense to put the details on paper !
I may have to take another look as reworking the adaptor ring on my old model now.
Thanks for posting these drawings.

I bought mine from Yita when he was selling them back in '98 or so. Here's a pic from a CMASS launch. (Still needs a paint job :o ).

Maybe someone out there can tell us where Yitah might be these days.
Yitah is alive and well in Michigan and has been busy building a family of incredibly cute kids. He was out of rocketry for awhile but returned at NARAM 49 and then started coming to our HUVARS meetings again.

He remains one of the most creative rocketeers I know. He built a capacitance discharge launch box that is pure genius, based upon discarded disposable cameras. Last winter he led a build session of these with our NAR group. I shamelessly used my daughter to convince the photo clerk at Walgreens to part with a recycle box of 100+ disposable camera shells so we would have enough for the session. I've also tried to convince Yitah to make a commercial version just for clusters. Can reliably fire 20 or so Estes igniters from 2 AA cells.

Yitah also designed an incredible, very easy to construct, rocket glider that won one of our recent contests. We were all so intrigued that Yitah volunteered to lead us in a build session of the models. Steve of Commonwealth volunteered his laser cutter to do the fins and Digital Astro did the cutting. The rocket was easy enough to build that we were able to complete them in a 2 hour build session. Yitah is working with Steve at Commonwealth to produce a commercial kit of this amazing rocket.

Yitah's a truly amazing guy and I'm really glad he's come back to rocketry. I don't think he has time to participate in these forums but I'll let him know folks are asking about him.

Thanks Gus for bringing us up to speed on Yitah and his doings, and you other fellas for posting info about your LJ1 dabblings. It's a very cool booster that probably gets overlooked by a number of capable rocketeers.

Cheers

That's great to hear Yitah is still around. Please ask him to join us if he has the time.

Now there's a name I haven't heard since my RMR days. I bought a few things from him back in the late '90s.

I'll see what I can find.

I had gotten some of his springs he was sending out for free back in the 90's to allow you to make real shock absorbers on the Super Vega. I put the drawing for it up on the BARCLONE site a few years ago.

Hey all, finally got an ID here on YORF.... still have rockets on the brain but very little time to build, fly, or otherwise....

Glad to see the LJ1 kit still gets a mention. I still have the original hardcopy and sketches and hope to scan it to a higher quality PDF when I remember to.

I saw on one of the other threads that the BT70 at 2.22 is shy of the scale 2.3 . Totally agree, I recall agonizing over that which is why I ended up doing the body wrap. It gives the body creases the LJ1 had while also marginally increasing the OD. I figure with glue and the two layers of 80# card stock it closes the gap to where it's probably only 1/32 off the ideal OD...

Mr. Wu,

I saw a reference to your LITTLE JOE 1 and am following up, in hopes of getting more information.

Get in your Delorean, dial in the year 2018 and accelerate to 88 mph.

Estes begins selling this in a very nice kit.

ESTES . . . Not any more https://estesrockets.com/collections/scale

Actually, I am looking for him to see if he can post his original high-res drawings.

Apparently, he is still flying with HUVARS, at least in 2022.

I've got one of Yitah's original Little Joe I rockets - built - but it's a bit of a basket case at the moment after my dog got ahold of it a few years back.

I was going to rebuild it, but when Estes released theirs, I built that instead.

If anyone wants an original Yitah LJI to restore, let me know - all I want is to get reimbursed for shipping.

I have been in contact with Yitah Wu . . .

He was kind enough to share his original files with me and to grant me written permission to share them in the Public Domain !

QUOTE :

Yitah,
Many thanks . . . I will share them on YORF, along with your "permission statement".

Dave, Steve Kristal was kind enough to contact me separately - I hadn't been on YORF for some time and had lost my login. Here are the instructions and plans. scanned from the original hardcopies and drawings. I added a scale to the 2 pages which were originally printed on 50# cardstock so you can double check the sizing if you print on a laser printer.

Best regards,

Yitah
