View Full Version : NARCON 2006: Planning WAY Ahead

Ltvscout (Scott), this inquiry is for you. ;) :D

While I am *well* aware that the information at the link http://www.narcon2006.org/ is NOT EVEN REMOTELY "up to date" , my wife is already planning ahead to see if we can afford to have her come with me to NARCON 2006, or not. (I just looked up a "Buy one airfare, get one *FREE* from Polident.com" offer. Odd, I didn't realize that Boise, ID and Chicago, IL are both considered "Zone 3." <shrug>)

So anyway, Scott, in the YORF archives for this topic, I see you mention that the room rate for the Marriot Racine should be ~$77 a night. I don't expect you to have that nailed down just yet, because March *is* only 5 months away. :p :D

Anyway, just post an appropriate response here.

Thanks yet again,

Heh, wow. I didn't think people were trying to look at the website yet. ;) I just posted what's there now yesterday so the people on the NARCON board could determine if the logo size was ok. Of course the keynote speakers are Lee Piester and Matt Steele, not what's on there now. ;) I don't like to reinvent the wheel, so I just keep use the same template each year for NARCON. :D

We were able to get the same hotel rate this year of $77 a night. Kurt and I shared a room there last year. A number of other YORF members also stayed there. It's a nice hotel IMHO. We will be holding our annual beerlofting event in the hotel lobby again. Bring along a good, local microbrew to the event if you're able. If you don't drink the alcoholic kind of beer, there's some great root beers out there as well.

We hope to meet the missus as well!

Polident? Chopper problems, Jay?
As things stand RIGHT NOW, I'll likely be a no-show for NARCON 2006. This two house deal isn't allowing for things like entertainment, heat, eating, etc.

Nice place. It should look even nicer this year after the swine-level accomodations that Ramada stuck us with for NARAM.

Here's a sincere prayer. We'll see if it does any good for ya. "Dear God, help Bill's old house sell, so he can afford to live in his new one."

Southwest flies to Midway airport in Chicago. Kenosha is close to being halfway between Milwaukee & Chicago. If the rates are a lot cheaper going Southwest (which they usually are) I'd consider that strongly.

What about Midwest Airlines? Do they fly out of your city? They're based here in Milwaukee.

What a rip-off ! :D
I wanted both !
Unfortunately I cannot attend, I will be engaging in my other hobby when this is taking place, a poker tournament.
Focusing on my hobby of poker usually allows me to finance my rocketry activities without spending any of my OWN capital !
It actually works out pretty good....but I only fly LPR and MPR, if I flew HPR I don't think I could finance it through this method.
I may go for L1 this year though.

Good luck!

I understand my good friend, Warren Benson (President of the NHRC #365 Section) will be a
featured speaker on modroc safety. While he's there, you all might also want to get him to
talk about modroc photography. Warren, over the past two years, has consistently captured
some of the most spectacular in-flight modroc photos I've ever seen anywhere. And, you
might also want to have him talk about his profession...I think he's an airline pilot for
Southwest Airlines.

Bummer, sure wish I could be in attendace (can't afford it right now, sorry!).

John, that's great you'll be in attendance. Are you going to get to stay for the entire duration of the convention? Either way, you're going to have a real blast of a lifetime. How
about keeping some notes and pics so a report can be made when you get back? Be sure
to attend the speech of Leroy Piester, past president of Centuri Engineering Co. Tell him

a regular basis...

Well guys in spite of my best efforts to free myself of work obligations the weekend of March 10-12th, Narcon 2006 for me just isn't going to happen :(

Scott thanks for putting me in touch with Scott Goebel. He was willing to help put me in touch with others staying at the Marriott to tag along but my post-hurricane katrina work schedule - well lets just say it stinks.

I was thinking of making the non-attending purchase of the program book and cd-rom proceedings from the website.

For $13 including shipping I'll have the permanent reminder of the time I could have met both Lee Piester and Matt Steele in person - but didn't. This would have been my first ever NARCON.

Dave, I do plan to take lots of pictures and to get all the autographs I can, even of just "regular rocketeers" who I know from YORF, TRF, etc. And yes, I'll be there for the entire weekend; I get to Milwaukee/Kenosha on Friday afternoon and leave on Sunday afternoon.

You heard it here first! :D

I have to post this on the NARCON site still, but since you asked, I'll post it here for you and anyone else interested. We won't have schedules for the seminars themselves till a couple weeks before NARCON. We keep adding more so we can't firm that up until then. Here's info on the other major events though.

NARCON 2006 will begin on Friday morning with a busload of middle school students coming in to Tallent Hall for a rocketry day. They will learn about the hobby while building a model rocket. NAR members will also instruct them on how rocketry relates to their science studies in school. After lunch the students will fly their creations in the abandoned parking lot to the East of Tallent hall.

The students will depart at around 2pm.

NARCON registration will open shortly thereafter at Molinaro hall. Vendors are able to begin setting up their wares at this time as well.

Several presentations will be scheduled for Friday afternoon beginning at 4pm.

The opening ceremonies and keynote address with Lee and Betty Piester will begin at 7pm.

Don't forget to patronize the Java Coast coffee bar on Saturday and Sunday morning. It's there for you!

Saturday morning presentations will be scheduled till 11:30 when Bunny will conduct the NAR town Hall meeting.

The lunch boxes will be passed out as you enter the room for the Town hall meeting.

Regular presentations will begin again at 1pm.

Micheal Wolff will give his presentation on Saturday afternoon at 4pm.

Saturday evening keynote speaker Matt Steele will begin at 7pm.

Sunday morning will bring another round of presentations that will conclude at about 2:30pm.

Jay, there are such things as CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. Either one can have videos on it, in the .avi, .mpg, .wmv, and other formats. These videos are typically only readable on a computer, unless there are DVD players that can play them, too. (I don't know.)

My wife reminded me that I was going to go research plane tickets from Boise to Chicago.Okay, my wife (Kathryn, for those of you looking forward to meeting us) finally gave me the go-ahead to buy our plane tickets -- once she managed to find a an acceptably-scheduled combination of "to and from" flights. So I bought those online Saturday night Jan. 28th. :D

*Then* I realized I'd been so busy both at work and at home (there's this whole "Centuri Memories" thing, see) that I'd FORGOTTEN TO ASK FOR THE TIME OFF AT WORK! So I sent an e-mail to my boss and my supervisor, saying I wanted to use 5 of my vacation days.

*Then* today I decided I'd better tell them that I'd *already* bought the plane tickets... (very quiet voice) ...just to help them in their decision-making process. :o

The good news is that "Sweeps Month" for this quarter is in February... which means *no* days off this month. All the same, I've got my fingers crossed... :o  ...and I'd appreciate if you'd all do the same. :o

Tell your boss and your supervisor that Lee Piester will be there and your attendance is absolutely required. (Too bad that didn't work for me). :(I was going to say that neither of them know who Lee Piester is, but I'd forgotten that I let my boss read my manuscript, as well as showing him the published article when it finally came out.

As it was, they weren't too happy, since I found out that one of my co-reporters will be off the week of March 13th. They said (basically), "Don't buy any more plane tickets without checking with us first. Next time, we won't let you go if someone's already scheduled to be off." So I told them it won't happen again. :o

I hope you can make it Jay. I want to hear all the details!(mock annoyance) "What *is* this? I'm a *reporter,* and this guy wants a *report.*" ;)

Do news agencies still use cassette recorders? Or, what is used professionally by, like, radio stations when they interview baseball players, etc.?

CenturiGuy

Do news agencies still use cassette recorders?Usually not. I've seen microcassette recorders occasionally, but never the "standard" audio cassette recorders... at least, not in recent years.

Or, what is used professionally by, like, radio stations when they interview baseball players, etc.?Funny you should ask that. I have a "media friend" up in Sun Valley who used a standard XLR ("cannon") plug microphone attached to a mini-disc recorder when he was in radio. He switched over to working for an online newspaper, and last time I saw him a few months ago (we were covering the Dalai Lama's visit to Sun Valley), he showed me his newest digital recording device, which had something like 20 hours of recording capacity  (he said it *wasn't* cheap).

But if it still works, I'll be bringing my 25-year-old standard audio cassette deck to NARCON. (It got slightly wet in my Great Basement Flood of June 2005.)

You knew I was a TV reporter, right? I run the camera, conduct the interviews, shoot all my own video, write the stories, edit my video, and voice one of the 4 or 5 stories I do every day. Funny thing is, I show up someplace with a TV camera, and after I do an interview, people ask me when the story will be in the newspaper. Whereupon I reply, "I don't know. I don't *see* anybody from the newspaper here. And this thingie here is a 'motion picture' camera, *not* a still camera..." (heavy sigh)

Right now, our cameras use digital videotape (DVC Pro format), although eventually we're supposed to transition to cameras which record directly to removable hard drives. But not yet.

Thanks! Yes, of course I knew you were a TV news reporter, Mr. Michaels.(chuckling) Since you asked a radio question, I couldn't remember if you knew, or not. ;) :D

Hmm, I guess the removable hard drives will be as convenient as tape cassettes, more easily copied/transferred, and more reusable, huh?At least until somebody releases an ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) bomb.

--Which is *not* the same thing as an "ELP" bomb. ("Love Beach," anyone? I'll leave judgement for any ELP fans, but I've *heard* things...)

Don't some consumer mp3 players come with mic inputs for voice recording? :o I have *no* idea. I've never looked at any :o -- up close, I mean.

Besides, how am I gonna squish one of my vinyl LP's into an .mp3 player?

"Love Beach"!?!?! Are you out of your mind? More like "Emerson Lake & Palmer," "Trilogy," "Tarkus," or "Brain Salad Surgery." Now *those* are da bomb!

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends!!

Dear John,

"Love Beach"!?!?! Are you out of your mind? More like "Emerson Lake & Palmer," "Trilogy," "Tarkus," or "Brain Salad Surgery." Now *those* are da bomb!

I meant "bomb" in the 1970's sense. As in, "*Not* so good." As opposed to "*bad,*" which means "good."

Cheers,

"So I'm hip. --Or is that hep?"
Tommy Tedesco, session guitaristIn that case, "Love Beach" was a HUGE bomb.

And I stand by my previous statement about ELP albums that are *da* bomb.

Jay, what about a rental car?Check.
Chicago hotel (coming and going): check.
Print out maps and directions (along with pictures of hotels and map of U-Racine campus): check.

Verify that tape recorder still functions: check.
New lapel microphone from Radio Shack: check.
3 blank audio cassettes for NARCON interviews: check.

Could use another microphone battery or two.
Better remember 3-prong extension cord.
(Don't forget to pack digital camera with 300(?)-picture capability.)

Drool over Semroc site and wonder if Taurus will be available at NARCON.

Cheers,

Chicago hotel?!? You're not staying with us? You're going to miss the beerloft on Saturday night!Actually, I won't. :p

We'll be staying at the Marriott Friday and Saturday nights, Mar. 10th and 11th. But we're flying into Chicago late on Thursday the 9th, and after NARCON we'll head back to Chicago to stay Sunday and Monday nights, the 12th and 13th. :D

So yeah, I'll be around for the Friday through Sunday festivities. ;)

Man, how late are you guys going to make me stay up that weekend? These days it seems like staying up past about 10:30 just kills me the next day.

But at least I won't have a hangover! Dr. Pepper is good to me like that. ;) :D
