Two individuals placed bids in excess of $400. What am I missing here? The hang tag is even torn through at the punch hole.

Gerry,

I had the same question. Price on the facecard suggests it's a pretty late model of no particular rarity.

I once sold some Centuri parachutes and was shocked at how high a price they sold for. The purchaser explained that he had a VERY complete collection and wanted that particular parachute because the package had a pre-printed price of 35 cents and he had never been able to buy one. It was in the old days of ebay and he knew the person who bid against him was a collector friend of his who bid high for the same reason he did.

Neither of the two bidders on today's Thor kit were newbies, so I wonder if it's something like the price-tag issue on my parachutes. I sure wish one of them would step forward and explain it. If they want to remain anonymous they can feel free to PM me and I'll pass the info along.

I think he was referring to Ben Franklin's "A FOOL and his money are soon parted"

I wonder if those are even going to hold up. The seller reported "failure to follow through" problems on some high bids from auctions earlier this month.

Franklin / Barnum... same thing, same reasoning... they were cousins you know. Yeah, cousins, that's the ticket!

I met Barnum once, over at Morgan Fairchild's house. Mick Jaggar was there too. Or was that Morgan Freeman over at Clint Eastwood's house?

Fool / sucker / idiot.... they're all cousins.

How about a hybrid quote (from P.T. Franklin):

A fool and his money are parted every minute!

Definitely much sinicism on the topic.

My goal is determing if the data point belong in the Estes kit database. Gus does mention that the $3.75 price on the facecard may a factor.

For some unknown reason, I cannot access www.ninfinger.org to check on 1971 catalog pricing.

Fall 1971 price was $3.25.

Price in the 712 catalog was $3.75. The kit did not appear in the 1973 catalog. In the July '72 issue of Model Rocket News (V12N3) the kit, and 8 others, were offered at special blow out prices. In the case of the K-28 kit, the price was $1.89.

Joe,

Not that it really matters but I'm curious if there were different printings. The Ninfinger version of the 712 catalog shows the Thor on page 39 at $3.25 and in the price index at the same price. Where did you see it at $3.75?

Hi Joe, I have several copies of the 712 Catalog and it show the price of $3.75 for the Thor Agena-B. The price in the 711 Catalog is $3.25. Estes had a price increase when the 712 Catalog came out later that year. Take Care, Jimi

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the information. Appreciate the time to check the catalogs and communicate the pricing history. I will update the Estes database with $3.75 and $3.25 facecards and list the recent eBay kit pricing realized at $3.75 facecard variety. Also will check my kit once arriving home tomorrow as whether $3.25 or $3.75. Suspect it will be $3.25.

My 712 catalog (three black and white rockets on the cover, blue background) has the illustration on page 38 with the description and pricing ($3.75) on page 39.

As a followup to my previous comment on this, I believe that pages 38-39 from the 712 Estes catalog shown on the Ninfinger site are actually pages 38-39 from the 711 catalog (black cover).

Joe, Jimmy,

Thanks. I didn't have time to go dig out my 71 catalogs. The Ninfinger version covers are labeled 711 and 712 so I presumed the inside pages were correct, but they're not. So maybe the $3.75 facecard was the issue.

Just a quick head's up that the Rainbow hang tag varieties are now posted on the Estes database hang tag guide. I've labeled the two types of hang tags as Large Letters and Small Letters to keep the nomenclature simple. Here is the link.

Feedback always appreciated.
