John Dyer of Red River Rocketry and I will be motoring north bringing his wares. I hope to have some Fort Worth brewed adult beverages. If not, I may have to contribute some of the WI local suds.
Ike, I's gots an Aquarius with your name on it.

Unfortunately, we (FlisKits) won't be able to make it... :(

However, we will have our standard kits represented (JohRockets) *and* we hope to be announcing our new Micromaxx kit line (Micro Classics) as well :)

Gonna miss being there this year!

They're both there on Saturday. Old Rocketeers Open Forum is at 1pm and the UFFO MITI is at 2:30pm. No conflict! (I would've squawked if there was because I'm going to be at both.) ;)

There are only X number of kits available for the UFFO MITI. I don't know what X is. Maybe ask Scott G. on our club list. It'll be first come, first served. I did not see a problem last year when Jim had us building his Decafeinator.

Something just occurred to me. Can we really call this a convention since we don't have funny hats to wear, a secret handshake, or donkeys?

DeanHFox
03-07-2006, 10:26 PM
No secret handshakes (but I'm sure my wife would say I've made a "donkey" of myself once or twice)...but we DO have cool terms like "Prang" and "CATO", and we know the difference between CP and CG, and AP vs. BP!

Knowing that kind of cool stuff, who needs funny hats? (except maybe hats with little propellors on 'em to keep our overheated brains cooled off! --- THOSE might come in handy, eh?) :)

We are getting packed to leave for NARCON. We will have three of our new kits. The Mars Lander, X-21, and Apollo Capsule will be available. Bruce and I will be there.

Would there be any interest in an informal MITI session for Mars Landers?

Kathy, Jim, and Taras. I miss you all already! I don't think I remember the "super secret model rocket vendors handshake" any more.

Quick question, if we're on the kit reserve list and going to NARCON is there a chance you could bring those kits or should we just wait and order them online? We tried that last year and it was far too confusing. We are leaving the reserved numbers here and taking the next ones in line so we make sure we don't get them mixed up while we are setting up the booth like we did last year. (Right Scott?)

Sheryl will be here getting some rest, finally. These last three weeks have been brutal.

I guess I have to sign up for the CD-rom of the gathering!

DeanHFox

All I can say is this: It was amazing to (first) listen to Lee & Betty Piester's story about the origins and eventual destiny of Centuri Engineering, and (second) to meet them, just as "people", if you know what I mean.

But perhaps the "coolest" moment of the weekend was standing around a table of Centuri memorabilia and listening to Lee say, "Oh, yes, Bob drew that picture, and the kids on the cover of this catalog were the sons of the photographer we hired to take the pictures", and to hear Betty say, "Oh, Lee, look --- this is the guy that ran production for all those years". The spontaneous stories and anecdotes were the highlight of the conference, so far as I'm concerned. Lee & Better were just the kind of people you'd WANT to be among the founding icons of our hobby...smart, gracious, funny, and just the best sort of "folk" to be around.

(and, Jim, speaking as an attendee of the UFFO MITI with my 11-year-old son, your styro cup kits are a BIG hit...it's all he talked about on the way home. He excitedly showed his mom and little brother the Triglider and Splitfire he bought, but then said, "But look at this UFO I built! It's all cups! Isn't this the coolest thing? I'm gonna figure out how to build more things like this!" Needless to say...a trip to Wally World for a bag of styro cups is on the agenda for later today) :)

I think one of the other "cool" moments was watching Lee and Carl in deep discussion in Carl's booth, talking about Semroc's kits. You could just see the "engineer's" and "saleman's" wheel turning in Lee's mind as Carl showed him how the SLS and other kits were put together. Here's hoping Carl shares some of his feelings either here or on TRF; and that some of the zillions of pix that were being shot around moments like the ones I've described make it here, or on TRF, or Sport Rocketry...it was definitely a weekend I won't forget anytime soon. :)

I'm bummed you were not there too Jim. It would have been nice to meet you. On the bright side, I met Carl & Bruce from Semroc, it was nice to chat with them, though their booth was very busy every time I walked by. I am simply amazed that just the 3 of them have so many parts & kits available! (I did my part to help their business, the mars lander kit looks wonderful!)

Also was nice to meet the folks from Sirius (they were showing a new sci-fi kit to be released soon), Red River Rocketry, and BMS. The UFFO session looked to be a big hit, the room was packed with kids & their parents (gee, why didn't I bring a kid along?).

Not much more to say about Lee & Betty, it was neat to learn about the early days of Centuri. During the BAR open house, Lee picked up a number of the different vintage motors on display, and described when and how they made them, very interesting. He seemed glad to be out of the motor making business. The centuri memories published in the program were great. Thanks Jay, and nice meeting you.

The team outlander presentation was enjoyable, the best part is the ammunition it gives me when my wife claims I'M obsessed. :)

Wish I could have stayed longer, this was my first big outing since OHS 4 weeks ago; I ran out of gas quickly. :(

I am SO bummed that we couldn't make it. I am sure that our MMX announcement would have gone off much better (I forgot to send Stuart a sign...).

I am glad that the UFFO session was a hit (i've gotten a lot of mail about that). I really wanted to me Lee and folks too.

I am thrilled that it was a good outting for Carl and Bruce too. Their first NARCON (because we talked them into coming) was not a very good outting as sales were very slow (for everybody). A good outting like this will keep folks like SEMROC coming out to the national events.

We will be at NARCON next year. What I have to do is keep in mind event schedules balanced against kit release schedules (that's what nailed us this time).

I can't wait to see some of the pictures! Since I wasn't in attendance I am hoping to put together a photo album of other's pictures, so if you have some send them to me and i will put something together for our site.

Wait 'til you see that one. The fins are going to be a work of art on their own. I was amazed at the size of the rocket. I always thought they were about 1/2 that size, but I also assumed the Taurus was huge when I got my first Centuri catalog as a kid.

"If I'd known what a testicle was at that age (9), I would have given one up for an Aero-Dart starter kit." I was sitting in my van waiting for my son to finish a haircut and I was laughing loud enough to make one of the Domino's delivery guys stop and look back.

Sure did! It showed up on my desk at work on Friday. A couple of opposing fins were squished a little (so the cross section looked more like an "X" than a "+" sign  ), but it's nothing a little plastic model glue won't fix. :D ;)

Besides, I mainly wanted it for the measurements (and suggested decal placement), so I'm a pretty happy camper. (I told my wife it was my sole NARCON purchase... and it *was!* ;) :D  )

Jeez, Jay! I somehow wound up buying 9 rocket kits and two nylon parachutes! And that was without even trying. Two of the kits were freebies, so that helped keep the expenses down a little. One was the Semroc X-21, free because I bought over $20 worth of other stuff (Laser-X and Recruiter) from them, and the other was a tiny kit that John Arthur of jonrocket.com was giving away.

And I bought CHEESE CURDS! (Not that they made it home.)

Bill, the only cheese curds I ate in Wisconsin were the fried ones you passed around at dinner on Saturday, so thanks for those!

Then in a little diner (Jonesy's) in Paris, MO, last Friday, I ordered "cheddar balls," which were similar in concept but not nearly as good as fried cheese curds.

Too bad there won't be anymore of Chef's Salty Balls. Isaac Hayes quit South Park the other day. :(

The CD won't be ready for a few months. My guess is that those of you who ordered both will get a single shipment.

Scott, I think this is the saddest thing I have read on this forum since becoming a member :(

Cheese, batter and grease. Don't you mean "thanks for taking several weeks off of my life"? ;) Those were carbon copies of White Castle cheese sticks. I guess there's only so many ways you can fry cheese.

That's actually fast! The NARCON 2004 CD took about 9-10 months and the NARCON 2005 CD took a year! We don't have that same person doing the CD for us in 2006 which is why it's now expected to get done in a couple months time.

In that case Scott, a couple of months time doesn't sound so bad after all :)

I can't wait to get the materials it but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.

Jay, that's a really good picture of both of you guys.

It was great to meet you and Bill at NARCON!

(Not to mention the several Scotts and other guys I met.)Over on OldRockets, Scott Hansen said he wanted to see *all* of my NARCON photos posted online. Then I mentioned the "derriere" shot of the two of us that John Dyer of Red River Rocketry took when we weren't looking. (I also told Scott that's why I tell people *not* to turn their backsides to the camera.) Anyway, here it is, posted below.

Mark Thell and I are trading stories about *something.* (I don't think this particular conversation involved an Estes Saros. That came later. ;) )

Cheers,

They were every bit as good as I remembered.

And you captured Scott Hansen in pretty much the same pose as last year, IIRC. (I think Kelo Waivio was in *that* shot, though.) ;) :D

Good job, Bill!

Well the NARCON 2006 program guide I ordered for non-attendees arrived in the mail today. No derriere shots of Jay & Scott or even a shot of Scott hugging all those empty beer bottles were included so I wondered just how good could it possibly be :D

All kidding aside - great job Jay with the Centuri Memories. I'm still going through them all but man are these great! So cool to see how others came through the hobby to get where we are today.

This was really a great idea and I can't wait to see what the CD will have on it!

Apparently Bill and Scott McCrate ended up with a single king-size bed in their room. Fortunately, the Racine Marriot supplied enough pillows to build a good-sized wall down the middle of the bed.

Bill kept referring to his room as "The Brokeback Mountain Suite."

The one big screw-up was not getting a picture of the whole Beerlofting crowd on Saturday night. Give me a beer and rev up my mouth and I pretty much forget everything I'd planned. Luckily I remembered to get Scott to strike the ceremonial "Beer Hawg" pose, so at some point I was thinking straight. In the old days I did a much better job as a "photo-journalist", much to the chagrin of some of my friends. ;)

I should also mention that I took the program into the restaurant when I got home on Sunday. (My brother's birthday.) My wife was paging through it and came to the Centuri Memories section. She immediately zeroed in on my picture. Shaking her head, she asked "What are these people going to think of you?" Then I reminded her that I had recently set fire to a park. Nuff said. :D

That is correct. The CD takes awhile to be put together. We felt that those purchasing both the program and CD would appreciate getting the program right away vs having it sent with the CD.

No clue. I sent Scott Goebel a message on our mailing list to see what's up.Personally, I'd like to hear *exactly* what I said when I introduced Lee Piester! :o

I basically remember the gist of it. But lemme tell ya, *you* try introducing somebody you really look up to, all the while trying *not* to do the Wayne and Garth "I'm not worthy" shtick!

(Lee later said that I did okay, so that means a lot. But I'd *still* like to know, if possible.)

I'd suggest those of you looking for your CD contact the NARCON event director, Scott Goebel, at zapjolt@wi.rr.com, to inquire about the wherabouts of your CD. After the debacles we had in 2004 and 2005 in getting the CD's produced in a timely manner, I had stated as a committee member that we should not offer a CD for 2006. I was assured that with the new person we had handling the CD that we wouldn't have to wait a year for the CD again. It's now been seven months.

It's not just some particular video footage, it's THE footage of Lee's and Matt's talks we're waiting for. Hmmm, I wonder if I should post Mike's (the guy who took the video and who we're waiting on) email address here so you guys can send messages to him. ;)
