I was just looking here:

1985 Estes Catalog (http://www.ninfinger.org/~sven/rockets/catalogs/estes85/85est36.html)

I'm really taken with the NASA Pegasus model; however, I can't find plans for this one. JimZ lists a part number 0806 Pegasus, but not this no. 1376 NASA Pegasus. I can probably get pretty close from the picture, but I'd sure like to see their fin patterns and alignment guide.

EDIT: I also really like the Scorpius here. (http://www.ninfinger.org/~sven/rockets/catalogs/estes85/85est50.html) Same situation though.

I admit I'm wondering about the stability of Scorpius...

Yeah, the Estes Scorpius (#1375) has caught my eye several times now.

Looking over the Scorpius instruction sheet, I couldn't help but notice the photo of the finished model for decal placement has the front supports at the wrong end of the forward tubes when compared to all the construction drawings. Same with the catalog picture. I wonder which would be considered "correct"?

The NASA Pegasus makes a nice upscale to BT-70 size but I found out that if you do that, you'll either need a 24mm cluster or Aerotech motors.

I'm hoping to try mine on an E18-4 or an F24-4 this weekend.

That's how I tracked down the information on the body tubes. You can get your BT-20J, BT-50FE, and BT-55C (14" long) from SEMROC. Look under "Classic Body Tubes (http://www.semroc.com/Store/Products/BodyTubes.asp)" (Scroll down below the Centuri ST- and LT- tubes).

You can also get a balsa equivalent for the nose cone from Semroc: BNC-55AO (http://www.semroc.com/Store/Products/NoseCones.asp) and Estes-sized centering rings (http://www.semroc.com/Store/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=87), as well.

And here it is Monday at LDRS: http://www.libertylaunchsystems.com/Gallery/LDRS2006/Day5/Full/DSC_0382.JPG

That's an O-something-or-other research motor (fka EX).

I didn't fly anything so big, but did manage to 1) get my L2, 2) power prang a BT-70 upscale Midget, 3) fly a Comanche on a full D-C-C stack and 4) get really psyched about my next outing.

HO-LEE SCHLITZ!

Congrats on the L2 and sorry about the Midget prang. My next outing should be this weekend, and I'm also pretty jazzed. I finally finished the BT-80 Wizard that I started YEARS ago. Just an E-powered flight, but it's always nice to finish one that has been around long enough to house spiders. (Boy, are THEY gonna be surprised!)

The construction of the Pegasus is much simpler than I expected... alignment guide? Who needs them! But I'm not looking to replicate it. Rather, I'm collecting details for a series of "exotic-lite" models I plan to build. Right after I build and fly the Cyclone unicopter...

Anyone care to comment on this discrepancy? It seems it might definitely affect the CP and CG of the model. On closer inspection, it also seems that the rear tube supports are reversed from the instruction diagrams.

Take a look at this Scorpius build thread from TRF. Both of the builders (JBeau and huxley) built theirs with the forward and aft engine pod supports in the rearward positions. That's also how Fore Check built his upscale.

It's just a case of sloppy illustrations. The catalog photo shows the model had the forward supports in the rear position, just like those back-page images. Match the photos of the model to be sure.

Study the RockSim file. The fins on the simulation are the same size as the ones on the model, just shown in the wrong place. The effect on stability will be the same as on the model.

What happens if you build it according to the illustrations? That would be the one that seems as if it may suffer from stability problems, since it should move the CP forward. Glad I never bought one of these back when they were available. I always followed the illustrations.

It only drops the stability 0.20 from where it would be in the correct position. This is consistent with any of the motors. The model will still fly, probably without you noticing anything different...

JSP

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. After all , you're only talking about moving them less than an inch...AND they aren't the primary means of stability anyway.

The tube fins are exceptionally tricky to model, even using Bruce S. "teflonrocketry1" Levison's method. So I'm not exactly how close the simulations are. :(

(Set the wayback machine for "Grip and rip it, 30 years ago"... i.e., build it, fly it, and see what it does.)

When I saw the rocket in the old catalog, I imagined a tricky fin alignment... but there really isn't anything hard about it at all. In fact, it may be one of the easiest fin alignment/attachment jobs I've ever seen. I can't imagine why this isn't a current model. It's attractive and easy to build.

(I say the latter without having tried yet...)

This is one I'm planning to build with my daughter, as soon as I can scrounge up the parts.

Check E-bay. You can usually find a clone kit available from Rocketpad.

That's what I like about buying the clone kits when available. I don't have to scrounge the parts and they usually come with decals.

And here's a current price list that I received from PD Rocketry yesterday afternoon:

K-20 Mars Snooper 36.95
K-21 Gemini Titan 34.95
K-28 Thor Agena B 32.95
K-32 Starlight 12.95
K-33 Trident 31.95
K-42 Orbital Transport 21.95
K-47 Cherokee D 19.95
K-49 Sprint 9.95
K-55 Goblin 12.95
K-58 A-20 Demon 19.95
1272 Vostok 23.95
1273 USS Andromeda 24.95
1281 Alien Invader 19.95
1283 USS Atlantis 19.95
1288 Starlab 21.95
1297 Solar Sailer 15.95
1343 Starfighter Combination Pack Torellian Invader and Orion Starfighter 29.95
1350 Black Hole Space Probe 21.95
1369 SS Cassiopeia 19.95
1372 Alien Explorer 24.95
1375 Scorpius 19.95
1902 Space Station Aquarius 21.95
1914 Galactic Taxi 17.95
1920 Starship Excalibur 19.95
2003 SDI Satellite 21.95

Some of these have balsa nose cones and some have plastic. Of the four kits I asked Eric at PD for details on, the Trident and Andromeda have balsa nose cones and the Alien Explorer and Scorpius have plastic nose cones. Since the Trident has 9 balsa nose cones, I think I can understand why its price is a little higher than some of the others.
