Question about Estes LTV Scout
 

I noticed something curious about the Estes LTV Scout.
The kit was introduced in 1977, with the only engine recommended as the C6-3.
The following year the ONLY recommended engine changed to the C6-5 and it stayed that way until it was discontinued.
I never noticed that in the past and have always flown mine on the C6-5 or an Aerotech 18mm D10.

Anyone know any background on this one ?

Those that have a flying LTV Scout, what do you use ?

I have a vintage LTV Scout that I am just getting ready to open and build. The face card has the NEW! logo in corner and says the recommended engine is C6-5.

Maybe they had a misprint in the 1977 catalog?

Not sure, but 1977 was the first year and it definitely shows C6-3

Probably a misprint. I imagine Estes was probably pretty thorough with flight testing before release of the product, so I doubt they changed their minds.

That said, I have several rockets that fly best on calm days with a C6-5 but weathercock with a little wind and need the C6-3 on those days. With all that clay nose weight, it's a candidate for weathercocking even in moderate wind. If it wasn't a misprint, the C6-3 recommendation may have been due to that. A C6-3 flight in calm air probably resulted in early ejection and possibly stripped stripped chutes. After a few customer reports of that, they may have decided a better overall choice was C6-5. If that's the case, both motors would probably be on the recommended list, so I'm sticking with a misprint. ;)

I was thinking the same thing; windy conditions when originally flight testing resulted in the C6-3 listed in 1977 that was revised in the following 1978 catalog to the C6-5 that year and every one after.
Because this is such an obscure minor issue that was so long ago, it may be that nobody is around any longer that really knows.
