We had our launch yesterday. It was too late in the day and too overcast to get any launch pix. We will be scheduling another launch in July during the day and hope to get better pix then.
I do beleive that this was the very first launch of the Golden Scout :)
While the kids had fun, they aren't that excited about launching in the winter... LOL Restricted to the parking lot the models suffered some dings, but then they have been taught how to fix dings, so... They were most dissapointed about the mass launch being canceled as this is what they were initially building them for. We only discovered this past week that it was canceled and the kids didn't find out till the day of this launch. I have several of the models that I am bringing to NARCON to see about getting autographed. In the mean time I have to get my registration paper work (these kits were bulk packed from Carl several weeks ago) so that we can all register. This is such a great tribute to Vern and Gleda. Thank you to Carl and the gang and Rocket Doctor for putting this together. Thank you to Vern and Gleda for this wonderful sport! Well, hell, you can even thank them for FlisKits and SEMROC for that matter... jim |

Thanks Jim We were dissapointed as well, much planning had gone into a mass launch, only to be shot down. But, like Carl said, there was a golden lining to the dark cloud, and, we can all look forward to celebrating Vern & Gelda's 50th anniversary. great group you have and a great build. We hope that you enjoyed it and thanks for the photos. RD |

Here are the two Golden Scouts I finished today. One had a defect in the balsa nose, so I had to sand its tip round. When gluing on the Tyvek strip over the engine catchhook, it helps to cut a slit in the Tyvek forward of the end of the catchhook. This makes it much easier to get the Tyvek to lay flat there. I used yellow wood glue for assembly (and a layer on the base of the nose to protect from ejection burning), and 5-minute epoxy for the fillets.
The balsa parts were finished with thin CA for strength, then two coats of KILZ spray filler with 220-grit sanding between and after, then Krylon 1315 white primer with fine sanding after, and then Krylon 1701 Bright Gold in several light coats. After applying the decals, I used Krylon 1301 Crystal Clear Gloss spray. The clear spray does dull the shininess of the gold somewhat, but the finish is much more durable with it. Be sure to bend the engine catchhook inward to help it retain the engine better at ejection. This was necessary when I flew my original Scout back in the 70s to prevent the engine from ejecting. --Tom |
