Can someone tell me what this jet fighter is? My knowledge of jet fighters (Marine Corp jet fighters especially) probably uses less then 10 of my brain cells.

Thanks!

Lockheed F-35. Since it's the Marine version, it has VTOL capability.

jeffyjeep 01-10-2018 06:09 PM

It a "jump jet" then?

I don't know if they've used it on a ramp or not. I do know there's two versions, the AF version has a smaller wing and no fan for VTOL. They are loud as hades... squadron of F-4 Phantoms loud. My son works at Lockheed in Ft. Worth so I got to see them being assembled. Let's just say that a huge box of Legos has fewer parts!

Well, yep...they've jumped off ramps. They are technically STVOL, but they can take off vertically if they aren't loaded down.

F-35. Biggest cost overrun boondoggle ever produced.
I have seen it fly. It was demonstrated at the 2017 Selfridge airshow for the 100th anniversary of the base this summer.

I'll testify to the loud! F5 tornadoes are jealous.

The USAF version is not nearly as loud as an F-4 in full AB.
I would imagine the USMC version could be in the VTOL mode.

I was not being literal. Both versions are very loud for a single engine fighter. They are much louder than the F-16's and F-22's that frequent the Lockheed facilities in Ft. Worth.

Quote:
Five independently prepared Air Force documents show that at most altitudes and speeds, the noise on the ground below the F-35 will be an average of 16 decibels louder than the loudest F-16 currently flying from D-M/TIA (a difference of roughly 60 times the physical energy & more than three times as loud perceptually).

1. The Elgin AFB Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) reports the F-35 at 500 mph was 121 db, & the F-16 was 97 db (a 24 db difference).
2. A joint empirical test by the AF & Lockheed reported the F-35 at 121 db at 1,000 ft, and 500 mph. While the F-16 at the same speed and height, was 114 db (a 7 db difference).
3. The Nellis EIS, reported the F-35 at minimum (cruising) power at 1,000 feet was 103 db, and the F16 at 89 db (a 14 db difference).
4. The Luke Air Force Base EIS, report landing estimates for the F-35, at normal military power (full throttle without afterburner) was 79 db, compared to the 66 db of the F-16 (a 13 db difference).
5. The Burlington Vermont EIS, reports that the F-35 produces 115 db at ground level, on take-off, while the F-16 produces 94 db (a 21 db difference).

We're getting a squadron of them at Truax Field in Madison.
