Anyone ever build a V-1 scale rocket?

In a discussion last nite with a small group of local builders the topic of building a scale V-1 came up. As none of us have ever actually built one we were curious how it might fly? The assumption was it would actually try to fly horizontal fairly soon after leaving the launch pad. Land Sharking I believe is the term. Has anyone ever experimented with this? As there is no commercial one available my thought is it would not be safe to fly?

Noris Raketen of Germany sells a V-1. Note the engine has been moved to the main airframe, away from the actual pulsejet location.

I've had luck getting Noris Raketen kits via hobby shops in the UK. Might be able to buy them directly too. Not bad kits - a bit different though. I built their "Natter" kit and it works pretty well.

Well how awesome is that!!!!!! Exactly what I need........I'll have to buy both, if I can figure out how to get that done. Thanks for the quick reply!!!

Is it possible to order direct from them here in the USA? I have a couple kits from them but they were purchased through Apogee.

That website has a lot of Estes products that have been discontinued for a LONG time.
Wonder if they truly are available or just really outdated info on the site.

I've done scratch builds using some hand made styrene vacuformed body and pulsejet pieces, for 24mm motors, I also put the motor in the main body to avoid offset thrust and drag, CG was around the LE of the wing, flights were generally straight wtih slight angle toward the drag of the ramjet, which was flowthrough...I've also done rc rocket glider versions, also with the motor in line with the main wing. Getting them to fly straight is just a matter of straight builds and CG placement forward enough, same with winged V-2's and Natters.

I think Jeff Vincent was working on one, or planning to, in the 1980's. Do not recall if he built and flew it or not. Was going to be R/C, perhaps for E6 power.

Would be incredibly difficult to do it with a rocket engine in the jet engine mount, due to the thrustline/CG offset problem.

More practical way would be to put the rocket engine in the rear fuselage.

But still, issues of mass and drag offset of the big jet engine pod, and needing to use a LOT of noseweight to make it stable. And getting perfect zero incidence between wing and stab (unless RC'ed, where that could be trimmed out).

Back in 2010 I tried to design one for a small Chinese Style Pulsejet. Once ready to mount the engine, realized model weight with the engine in the back would be too much for the egine's thrust.

Would have needed a huge nose weight to balance.

Here is a photo of how it compared in size to a common door.

I still have the drawing. It is a complicated build, I would need to go into the drawing and simplify build techniques.

Model is over built-it could withstand 30lbs of barbells placed on the fuselage with wingtips supported on papercups. This project will be looked at in the future-plan to convert to AeroTech D2.3T reloads.

Current project to complete is Saturn V Lamp.

The D2.3 is really good for models at or under 5 oz, maybe 6-7 if launching below the required 45 degree angle for NAR rules.

In that size, you should be able to do an E-6 powered version if you keep it lighter, say 10-12 oz rtf, I've done one that size but put the motor in the tail so thrustline wasn't an issue and you can't tell in the air.
