help with estes launch rods
i have just bought a new rocket the estes "stormcaster" it uses D sized engines and requires a bigger launch rod than we have and i am wondering if i can still use a smaller launch rod?

It'll be better to use a 3/16" launch rod. You can find them pretty cheap at your local
Home Depot stores. The thing about launching such models on the 1/8" rods is you'll risk getting "rod whip" at launch, something you don't want to happen.... ;) |
Ditto.....You can pick up a four foot steel rod at the hardware store (Lowe's/Home Depot) for under $5. The Estes pad should already have a slot to accept the larger rod. Don't buy the two piece Estes rod......they want over $10 for it.
Need something to carry a four foot rod in to keep it from getting bent? While you're at the hardware store, pick up a four foot length of 3/4" schedule 40 PVC, a cap to glue to one end, a screw type adapter for the other and a screw cap to fit. Mine stores all my rods (1/8", 3/16" and 1/4") |
thanks guys that will really help me out

Yes, and plain steel is fine IF you are careful about cleaning it off after a launch day. Just steel wool it and then wipe it down with some WD-40 to prevent rust. Stainless steel is nice (which is what I have) but it is softer and more prone to bending. But you don't have to worry as much about cleaning it off and it won't rust. But it is soft. |

Too bad I don't do work for that company anymore where I got all those SS rods. :( I do still have some "extras" left should you need any in the future, Kurt. |
