OpenRocket format now supported on YORF

For those wanting to contribute designs using OpenRocket, it is now possible to post the native ORK files in your messages. OpenRocket is a Java-based design program with features similar to RockSim, and as of the current version (1.1) it is capable of reading generic-level RockSim files (no subassemblies or pods yet).

We are watching the development of this program carefully, and hope to use it more in the future. No, we won't be dropping RockSim. But OpenRocket offers an interesting alternative route to rocket design on a tight budget.

Very cool!

Thanks Craig and Scott!

Cool! I've been feeling my away around in OR and welcome the ability to share .ork files. Thanks.

WOO HOOO!!! YEA BABY! :D

I mean.....What a wonderful thing to hear. Thank you.

That is cool, and I've used OpenRocket several times.

I just wish it had lists of body tubes and nose cones to choose from like Rocksim does.

(Unless I'm missing something, of course.)

I'd also like 3-D rendering capability.

I just signed up on the OpenRocket forum (Solomoriah is already there), and one of the issues the developer speaks of is the databases. He doesn't like the RockSim CSV's, but sounds like he's going to implement something similar in a later release. The materials, for example, are currently hard-coded in Java properties.

If any of you are software developers looking for a challenge, go sign up on SourceForge and log into the new forum. It hasn't been up long, so the information is still spotty. Maybe we can help fill it up... :D

I also posted a link to our little sandbox, so hopefully we can get the developer to migrate over here from time to time...

It's been a lifetime since I did any serious coding...

One thing that would be incredibly useful is a rkt <--> ork conversion
utility.

OpenRocket can read RKT files, provided they don't include the latest stuff, like subassemblies and pods. So, it already has the beginnings of a RKT-to-ORK conversion. RKT files are just XML, but ORK files are more like program code. Perhaps we can convince the developer to switch to XML also...

Actually, if you save your ORK files in Uncompressed format (uncheck the box on the SaveAs dialog screen) you will see that ORK files are actually XML as well. (very similar in format in fact to RKT files).

Also - some features that are missing from OR 1.1.0 include - printing 1:1 scale fin and transition section templates, and fin/lug alignment guides. I have developed a Utility program that will create these templates from your uncompressed ORK files. You can download it from the foxvalleyrocketeers.com website (in the "Reports" section).

My utility also allows you to display your 3D flight trajectories inside Google_Earth.

That would fantastic. I've been using OR1.1 since it came out. I started with the first Beta version and followed the updates. What a great program. I've been working up files for all of my scratch scale projects. If we could get direct contact/feedback with the developer here on the forum ( as we are the end users) we'd probably see fairly rapid developments with this system. I for one am excited. Just wish I knew code. Alas, I am quite the programing knucklehead.
