WOOSH at Maker Faire- Milwaukee

As some of you know based on discussions and a previous E-mail- WOOSH will have
a booth at the 2016 Maker Faire Milwaukee.
This is an annual exhibition intended to showcase a wide variety of skilled
hobbies, crafts, education programs and other pursuits which involve making
things.

Some of you have already expressed interest in participating in WOOSH's Booth at
this two day event.
It will be held Saturday and Sunday September 24 and 25. Others may be hearing
about it for the first time RIGHT NOW!

OUR BOOTH will primarily involve:

1) DISPLAY of our club's Rockets. This is LEVEL 1 of WOOSH member
participation. I hope that many of our members will want to participate at this
level. HERE'S HOW: Select a rocket that you are particularly proud of. It can be
low power, mid power,or high power; scale, competition etc. The wider the
variety the better! If you have several rockets you'd like to display- Let me
know. We will accommodate as many as space allows. Please respond through this
thread on the YORF WOOSH page. As the Maker Faire
time is rapidly approaching ( we have 2 weeks as of this writing ) Please
Respond ASAP. WE need to arrange pick up/ delivery.

2) I am prepared to man the booth for the majority of both days. But I would be
delighted to share the man hours with any and every body who is interested. This
is LEVEL 2 participation. Again the greater the number and wider variety of
WOOSH GUYS (including women) the better. We all know that our club has an
amazing talent pool. You do not have to give a seminar- you may, hopefully, be
asked a question or two. Basically you are there to REPRESENT our club's
friendly outgoing personality. This will also give me a chance to go to the
bathroom or get a hotdog for lunch.

3) If you feel comfortable in giving a demonstration of a build technique, piece
of equipment ie: tracking, recovery electronics, in flight camera work,
whatever- THAT would be fantastic! That would be LEVEL 3 participation. If you'd
like a block of time to do so- We can talk about it when you identify yourself.

Finally and really most important- PLEASE plan to attend. The Maker Faire is a
really great activity for anyone who is interested in interesting interests.
Perfect for bringing the kids, grandkids or all of you friends. AND IT'S FREE!

This is the first year of WOOSH participation at MAKER FAIRE MILWAUKEE. It's an
open book at this point. JOIN US to make it a worthwhile annual WOOSH event. I
hope to hear from all ( at least some ) of you!
Thanks,
Walt

We've gotten a GREAT initial response to the WOOSH BOOTH at Maker Faire Milwaukee through
the club email list. This thread can also be used to express interest in helping out!

All of the club officers - Russ, Mark, Carl and myself will be there for some significant portion of one or both days! Dennis Pallen also will be doing some Booth Duty. If you want to help we have plenty of room in the schedule.
See the BIG POSTABOVE for what it's all about.
We definitely need more rockets for exhibition. So you can PRESENT and REPRESENT at the same time. We're waiting to hear from YOU. All sizes and skill levels will be considered for display!! Show your work off to a BIG CROWD of enthusiastic people from all over the city, state, and region.

QUESTIONS????
This is as good a place as any to ask. Otherwise, if you're hooked into the WOOSH email list that'll work too.

Daily Update 9/12/16

We now have a total of six WOOSH Guys who will form the core of the booth tenders at Maker Faire! All of the club officers have volunteered a significant block of time on one or both days.
No surprize there- BIG THANKS to Mark, Carl and Russ for going the extra mile as is often the case at WOOSH launches and other events! Also kudos to Dennis Pallen and John Cieslak for pitching in as Booth Tenders. BUT we can still use more help! So if you're planning to attend Maker Faire this year- STOP BY and hang out for a while, maybe answer a question or two about that really cool rocket you have on display.

AND THAT brings me to my second point- I have not heard from anyone else about Rockets for display. I know there's still time but HEY! WHERE ARE YOU? I KNOW YOU HAVE A GREAT ROCKET THAT THE AVERAGE GUY HAS NEVER SEEN! The average guy remembers that Estes Alpha he made in 7th grade. He has no idea what modern rocketry is all about! Here's the best chance we have to let him and his whole family know what a great hobby we have.
Don't be shy. Bring it out and show it off.

Contact me and we'll set up a time when I can pick up that rocket you really like and want to show at the WOOSH Booth. Whether you can man the booth or not- WE NEED YOUR ROCKET!

and of course this reminder- If this is all mumbo jumbo and you have no idea what the heck Maker Faire Milwaukee is and what is Walt talking about anyway ?- See the 1st post way up on top and/ or post questions HERE or on the WOOSH email list.

I'm just curious, as I live in Michigan and can't make it...
Do you ever have anyone displaying any woodworking or leather crafting?
Or is this out of the scope of what you do?

WRE 09-13-2016 05:57 PM

To Woody's Wokshop-
The Maker Faire Milwaukee has over the past few years featured both woodworking and leathercraft as well as many other crafts. But as WOOSH is a club dedicated to the rocketry hobby, our display will feature only rockets and skills directly relatied to building and flying model rockets.

Thanks for the inquiry.

Oregon Rocketry has had a booth in the local (Portland, OR) Maker Faire for four of the last five years.

The demographic out here, at least, tends to be families with young kids. Most interest in actual model rockets seems to come with dads who would like to get back into the hobby . . . sometimes "when this one is older."

The last two years we added a paper rocket activity. Kids and parents roll a rocket from paper, add cardstock fins, and we launch it from a compressed air launcher.

This is INSANELY popular. Kids and parents both get a kick over their model blasting up a couple hundred feet (?).

Downside: It really distracts from interest in actual model rockets.

ah, got cha. You're just a part of the fair.
Nothing like that ever goes on around here, sure wish I could make it over there.
Thanks for the info.

Sure it does!

Check out HUVARS schedule for next year.

I've haven't participated yet but HUVARS attends the Maker Fair held a t Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Michigan in late August.

Member Gus knows all about but hasn't been around today.

Hey Gordy. Dearborn is just about as far, if I take the ferry across Lake Michigan.
Last time I went to Detroit is when my Brother moved out West to work at Boeing about 15 years ago.
I think I was 12 the time before that.
Wish they did something like that in Grand Rapids, it's only an hours drive.
