WANTED: Estes Polaris (1324)/Cold-Power Marauder (KL-3) Fin Scans & Infot
Ok, working on a sim of the Estes Polaris (1324). I received a scan of the instructions from Doug Bertelesen of it, and I've seen the JimZ's page for it (plans.rocketshoppe doesn't have the Polaris). Problem is, Doug didn't have the fins to scan, and JimZ's image of the fins looks like a scan of a bad photocopy of the fin. It gives the length, but is very grainy, and in my opinion not very trustworthy for an accurate sim.
Found that the Polaris used the same fin pattern as the Estes Cold-Powered Convertible kit the Marauder (KL-3). JimZ's doesn't have that, and the info that plans.rocketshoppe has leaves much to be desired. So, I'm looking for a scan of the fins (BF-L3 (PN 32254) from either the Estes Polaris (1324) or their Marauder (KL-3), along with a ruler for scale. In matrix or out of it is OK. If it's out of the matrix, the ruler is best along the root edge of the fin. Thanks to the Estes Custom Parts Catalog, I know that the fins are 3/32" thick. I could also use the width/height of the widest blue band of decal for the Polaris (I can scale what JimZ has from that), and while I'm at it, the width/height of the black bars for the Marauder. Jim, according to my spread sheet, I have the 2174 Polaris.
Would this be the same one? Estes instructions page has the one your asking for, but not mine. Mine's all boxed up, but here in the apartment. So off hand, I don't know if they are the same. |

That's the later version. http://www.rocketryforum.com/showth...-Polaris-(-1324) There's an upscale of the 1324 in this thread. I've got an upscale that I did using one of my Phoenix Bird kits, but I've yet to paint and decal it. |
Woody,
Bill's right, they are two totally different beasts (that just happen to share a name). Thanks for checking though. |
I might have the original cold power kit. I'll have to get to the box my unopened kits are in. I'll try to get to it tomorrow.

Thanks!

I submitted the plans to Scott a while back. Here is the link.

Looks like I don't need to dig out that box today........

I just compared the two plans/instructions sheets. The Polaris and the Marauder are the same rocket. The only significant change is the Polaris had a plastic nose cone and the Marauder had a balsa one. Sort of like the Jinx, which was the old Firing Line Vampire molded in purple instead of black plastic.

There are a couple of other minor differences in the Polaris/Marauder, the Marauder uses a different nose block from the Polaris, and shock cord, as well as the launch lug location. Again, these are minor, and externally would be hard to spot, if not impossible, other than the totally different appearance of the motor and/or engine hook at the back end of the rocket.
While the instructions that Eagle3 submitted are very useful for cloning and historical purposes, the drawing of the fin on the other hand isn't very useful to me. Here in China, while I can print .pdf files, they do not scale properly on A4 paper, and I don't get a consistent variation from one print to the next to say add +/- 5, 10, or 15 percent each time to adjust for it. Add to that that there's no dimensions on the fin given, and the fin's outline doesn't appear to be very precise. Finally, the odd reference on the drawing to the Super Flea 0815A is confusing (and totally unrelated), even the Javelin (0815B) doesn't use the same fin. What I'm looking for an unimpeachable clear image of the actual fin, with a ruler for scale, that could be used to clone these kits. I'm also looking for a clear indication of the width of the decals for the Polaris so that I can finalize my sim of it using the decal image from JimZ. |
