Centuri - Defender Space Probe (KC-35 or #5095)

The Defender, I believe, was Centuri's first cluster kit and was available from 1967 until about 1970. As you probably noticed, it was NOT in the '71 catalog.

May have been, in essence, superceded and seen as somewhat redundant once the cluster 'Apollo' kits were released in '68 (1/45 Little Joe II three engine cluster) and the '69 release of the two engine Saturn 1b and three engine Saturn V.

That brings back memories of my first rocketry order from Centuri around '67 or '68. Ordered the Li'l Herc (easy), the Hojo (hard), and the Defender (harder). No skill levels back then so I ordered the coolest looking rockets. The Defender had die crushed, er, cut fins, friction fit engine retention, and a rubber shock cord. Shock cord retention was two slits cut into the body tube with the cord fed in and knotted. Of course, the modern iteration in the Semroc retro repro is a much improved version. Also much more expensive. Ah, the good old days.
