Mercury Redstone - 24 mm

Hi ,

I am new to the forum but not to the hobby. After a 34 year hiatus I am getting back into the hobby hoping to get my grandchildren excited about it. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the building aspect of the hobby.

I have a Estes Mercury Redstone (1921) with a 2'' OD x 19.5 main tube Produced 11/4/15 that I hope to start building soon.

My question, is there someone who makes a 24mm engine mount for this model or is this something I will have to fabricate myself?

Thanks,
Mike

I used a compass cutter to cut a bigger hole in the provided centering rings. And no engine block. Not doing that anymore. Thrust rings are fine and easy to add.

I also had a friend 3D print a Jupiter/Exporer nosecone for it.

This ain't that tough,

Here's the eRockets/Semroc link: http://www.erockets.biz/semroc-cent...to-20-pkg-of-6/

Just add some ST-9 tubing, a block and a hook.

Always check with eRockets . . . .

Thanks for the link.

Randy from eRockets has helped me out with the parts needed. Hopefully I will have them by the end of the week.

Would it cause any problems to change to a 24'' nylon chute over the 15'' plastic that came with the kit?

It comes with a 15" now? They used to ship with an 18" main and 12" for the capsule.

As long as it fits loosely enough to consistently eject with plenty of wadding, no problem. Just don't adapt down to an 18mm motor with the heavier components.

Ya, it only comes with the one chute now. Hope I measured it correctly. I measured from flat side to flat side and came up with 15'', its 17'' diagonal . Which one is the correct method?

Flat to flat, I'd assume. That's odd. Even the old BT-60 based K-41 kit used two chutes.

It has always been my understanding that chute diameter is determined by measuring from the WIDEST span across the chute (point-to-point), NOT the narrowest span (flat to flat).

I just measured an Estes 12" chute. It's about 13" at it's widest span and about 11 1/4" at it's narrowest. Therefore neither is correct, but narrowest (flat to flat) is about 1/4" more accurate. YMMV on other sizes.

Edit: BTW, just measured a mid 70's Centuri 16" chute. It's only about 14 1/4" in the round and 15 1/2" at the tips of the shroud attachment points. Centuri jipped us. I always thought they looked closer to a 12" than an 18" Estes chute. The clear shroud attachment points make it look even smaller.
