How do you store your Gyroc?
I recently built a Gyroc clone from BMS.
I find that if I store it with the flaps straight, the elastic will loose its elasticity. If I store it with the flaps bent, the adhesive hinges start to wear as the flap tries to pull away. Has anyone found a solution? |
It doesn't help you with your current Gyroc, but maybe the solution is to build it such that the elastic can be replaced. I've seen Mars Landers done this way so that the lander legs' rubber bands can be replaced after they start to lose their elasticity.

Lee's idea is probably as good as any. Making another Gyroc clone I might use Tyvek for the hinges and attach them with CA then store with the flaps deflected. Or use a material that I have used very successfully for control surface hinges on small RC models - Scotch clear Mulit-Task tape - installed after painting.
As I vaguely recall having my first couple of Gyrocs back in the day (yes I had one when it was "Free with a $5 order"), I ran into exactly what you're describing and for the BMS clone I have now I think I've had the same issue (though that model has had other issues, too.....) |
I would suggest storing it with the flaps bent.
When the hinge material starts to separate hit it with a thin film of CA. That worked for me. You will still need to replace the elastic over time regardless. |

I never had to worry about those problems with the Gyroc I built (from free kit too). I tried sending it on a high-powered flight and ripped the wings off! I have one now I haven't built yet but won't try to send it sky-high this time!
