Nike Smoke versions
I know there is the Nike Smoke, and the Nike Nike Smoke (2-stage), but I thought I came across an extended version of the Nike Smoke, maybe 25% longer. Or am I losing it???

Not aware of a 25% larger Nike Smoke.
There is a "large payload" version of the Nike Tomahawk. |
Yeah, I thought I saw one about 25% longer, but doing a little searching I haven't been able to find it. If it did exist I presume it would have been used to reach higher altitudes.

The Nike Smoke used a Nike Ajax/Hercules booster, of which there were thousands made. Unlike liquids, where they could just exend them by welding in a section of airframe and doing the same with the tanks, the solid booster would have to be cast with different grain geometry and a different nozzle if it were to be made longer. That wasn't an economical option. When they needed more juice, they moved up to other boosters such as the Honest John.

The Nike motor was surplus military hardware, and as pointed out before, you couldn't just extend it. That said, there were Nike payloads that had a cylindrical section above the motor, including the 2nd stage payload of the Nike-Nike Smoke. And I have seen photos of high-power models of the Nike Smoke that had an added section (electronics bay or somesuch) that extended the length of the model body. That model wasn't accurate, but maybe that got stuck in your head. |
