Stuck motor

I flew my Leviathan on an Estes G40 today. The flight went well, but the motor has seized in the mount.

I've heard the recommendation to peel the label off - but had gotten away with not - until now.

At this point, I've got the motor about 1/3-1/2 out before the casing shattered. (Channel locks)

Any suggestions for getting the rest of the casing out?

Have you tried using a dowel to push it from the front?

Use a Dremel tool to cut a slot in the casing.
That will loosen it up.

Not yet, Rich.

And thanks for the suggestion, GH. I think I've got a narrow grindind tip that I can reach down into the mount.

When I cracked the casing, I kinda hoped it would shatter lengthwise enough to relieve the sidewall friction. But no such luck. I'll try grinding a slot down the length.

I cut 4 slots in the empty casing - I couldn't reach very far in, so I'm not sure they made a large difference.

Then I flipped the rocket over and tapped on the forward end with a wooden paint roller handle. Felt my way I to the motor mount and tapped by raising a couple of inches and letting it drop.

Worked like a charm. Leviathan recovered.

Thanks GH and Rich.

Good deal! What Aerotech hardware do you have?

aeppel_cpm 07-02-2015 07:54 AM

No Aerotech hardware at the moment, Chad. We do have a 3G 29mm CTI. I've eyed some of the 24mm casings by both vendors. And am faintly tempted by 38mm - but only for 1 project.

The stuck motor was an Estes labeled AT single use. I still have a bag of them scrounged from the clearance shelves of Hobby Lobby.

What 38mm hardware were you considering? I can most likely help you out with that.

The more I look at them (38mm) the more they scare me.

That means 240.
