Chutes from China go back a lot farther than the white ones from 2009. Based on some of the older kits I've gotten in my stint as a BAR, they were one of the first components to be sourced in China, long before the entire kits started being manufactured there.

What changed was the standards for lead content in "toys", which drove Estes to the white then red ones before their vendor(s) in China were able to make colorful 'chutes which also met the standards.

While the shroud lines in the white and red 'chutes were kind of dodgy, I really like the red canopies - they're kind of springy in feel and are relatively resistant to not opening when cold, and they show up well in all sky conditions. I would love to be able to get the red translucent canopies with the shroud lines that come on the current Estes 'chutes....but that's a silly request, really.
