How about a Rheinbote? This four-stage artillery rocket was an ancestor (although not directly) of the Honest John, able to hurl an 88-pound warhead up to 140 miles, and some stages could be removed for shorter-range shots (see: http://www.google.com/search?source...0.G tEvwp6xWac ).
