For wood I have gotten away from using FNF or sanding sealer and apply several coats of light gray automotive primer Rust-oleum #2081830. I get 12oz rattle cans from Walmart for less than $4.00 each. The problem with this primer it is not compatible with Krylon lacquer so you have to use an enamel finish over it. Enamels are more difficult to work with than lacquers, they take a long time (days) to dry as opposed to 30 minutes for a heavy coat of lacquer, and hence are more prone to drips and runs. I have learned how to apply the Rust-oleum enamels and get a good smooth finish, it just took a bit of practice. For plastic and other highly detailed surfaces I use Rust-oleum painters touch 2X ultra cover flat white primer #249058; again this paint is only compatible with other enamels, not Krylon lacquers. In fact I haven't found a good primer for Krylon, their new Colormaster primer crazes styrene plastic and takes a long time (days) to dry.
