Examine the test file below. It may not be exactly what you had in mind, but I think it answers the basic question of "tubes within transitions within tubes", and how to get there from here...
The short answer is "yes", using V9. It will require the 'pods' feature to create the effect. Subassemblies are not as sophisticated, and have greater limitations. A pod is a subassembly on steroids, but does not yet have the ability to be saved as a separate item. That would be a nice feature, though...
