If 3/16" x 3' (or 5 mm [I *think*] x 1 m, the slightly narrower and longer international equivalent) lengths of carbon fiber or Kevlar fiber rod are available, they might be considerably stiffer than aluminum rods; so might be a stainless steel rod of that size.
