This might make an interesting--and inspiring--NAR, CAR, JAR, UKRA, etc. new contest category, which could begin as a club activity. Finding, obtaining, and restoring such old and "shopworn" rockets could be engaged in as a judged contest event (it may seem strange, but even the ancient Olympic games included poetry competitions, and even the NAR has a similarly 'esoteric' contest event, the NAR R & D competition, which includes presenting a paper about each contestant's project). Now: An "Ebay Rescue Rockets" contest (it need not be restricted to Ebay; the "patients" could be rescued at yard sales, church bazaars, estate sales, auctions, flea markets, swap meets, etc.) event could--like the NAR R & D contest event--include the presentation of a report about what each contestant did. Each competitor could be judged on the presentation of his or her report, the rarity of the rocket, and on the degrees of difficulty in finding and restoring the old rocket (the report--backed up by photographs--would document how worn and or damaged the rocket was). Also: Such a contest event would increase the levels of workmanship (by demonstrating what can be done; for example, mojo1986 posted an illustrated article--"Repairing Rocket Tubes That Have Zippered Along The Seam"--about a new method for repairing body tubes that he invented and found to work very well, see: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showt...ck+Brant+repair ). By doing this, it would inspire space modelers, including younger ones, to test, exercise, and strengthen their own powers of resourcefulness, creativity, and workmanship.

Comrades:
Here's a picture of the now-repaired sustainer. I originally wanted to replace only a minimal amount of the core-sample damage tubing but the more I cut off, the more that needed removal. I ended up replacing about 6 3/8 inches of ST-7 tubing, essentially from the main fins forward. I was able to save the original finlets. I checked the JimZ plan for spacing. The second picture shows the repair: a coupler with a Kevlar leader and the original finlets. I lined up the Kevlar under one of the fins so the bulge doesn't show. So now I sand and prime. I'm pretty sure I know why the last flight was a ballistic reentry: the external staging coupler was too tight a fit on the upper stage. I'm going to hate losing the booster and sustainer decals as I used them to line the whole thing up, but I have a cool idea for the finish.

Very nice, are you going to go with the blue and red color scheme? It seems baked into the DNA of that rocket. |

Well, for sure the booster will be red, but the sustainer . . . .
I recognize the present colors from the Way Back Machine in my mind: Pactra Red and Blue. I'm pretty sure these are no longer available. The plans show an Easy scheme of orange sustainer with blue nose and booster or a Challenging scheme of red booster, blue sustainer and black nose with white geometrics on the fins. I'm thinking black sustainer but I'll wait and make some choices once I see how the prime coats go down.

Here's the booster and sustainer with my Aero-Dart primer drying in this afternoon's sunshine.
The Aero-Dart is ready for color painting; the Stiletto is going to need a lot of work.

Well, I found the Stiletto decals on Jim Z's site, they are kind of rough and will need cleaning up. But the main issue is , no ruler in the tif.
If someone could give me the height of the lettering or some other definable measurement, I could see what I can come up with. I can screen print on the fully backed sheets or on sheets without the backing (decals are thinner, but also more delicate). I'm assuming the decals are white, not silver.
