Default Don Sahlin's famous space ship rocket, in action!

The Handbook of Model Rocketry has, or had (I'm not familiar with recent editions), a photo of a fancy spaceship rocket on a launch tower. The text describes it as a project of Don Sahlin, who is best known as one of the original Muppet crew.

My brother sent me a link to Jim Henson's trippy, surreal short movie "Time Piece:"

Well, ****! There is Sahlin's rocket, about a minute in! First time I've seen a color photo of it, much less a launch!

I remember coming across this movie segment some handful of years ago (and for the life of me I can't recall how I even found it) and had a similar reaction.

Here is the Centuri article in their American Rocketeer newsletter (link below) from about 1967 on Sahlin and some info on the rocket itself. The article says it was powered by six (in the older English units measure) B3 motors and a Mini Max E. That combo might just explain why it left the pad so quickly!

Thanks, Earl! Lots of good info.

I wonder if this rocket still exists, perhaps at Muppet HQ, or the late Don Sahlin's attic.

Can someone mansplain the Henson short to me? I didn't smoke weed or do shrooms in college so I don't quite get it.

It is a plot-less, surreal thing. A series of "eyeball hits." Don't take it seriously.

I don't do shrooms or weed, but I enjoyed it.

Here is the whole film:

Yeah, that is him. He was a tall lanky dude. In some of those shots he almost looks like he is on stilts.

He also looks like the a young John Carridine (see attached image of John)...actually, a lot like him when John was young and doing his classic horror movie roles.
