Windmills are a major factor. BMS offers mainly soft but can do hard as needed.

One wonders if BMS could do the custom cones for a "new Semroc".

Bill sends me all the hardwood stuff. I don't think he can do hardwood.

As I stated earlier, BMS no longer does any custom work.

That's how it was. Before "now" he used to offer soft, medium and hard balsa.

OTOH I have boxes and boxes and boxes of nose cones, so for me it really doesn't matter...

I have a modest stash of nosecones, many of them from Bill. I also have a lathe and some big chunks of balsa including some I got from the long-defunct Lone Star Balsa (that burned). So, if I don't have the right cone in my stash, I can surely make one
...
I like to turn harder woods - they're a little easier to work with than balsa, which tends to tear and requires very sharp tools. I've found that cedar is a really nice material except for one thing. It turns easily, and is fairly light. But it seems that it can be prone to shrinking. So I've learned to coat it right away after the lathe work so that the moisture remains trapped in the fibers.

There's nothing like having a once-perfectly-machined cone slide down the aiframe because it shrunk

I miss Lone Star Balsa. it was the only place I could get 4.25" x 4.25" x 40" balsa. Sadly that stock is all gone.

4" x 4" is kind of hard to make a 4" nose cone.

You have to hold your tongue just right when mounting it in the lathe.

I don't even try, with either 4" cones, or 3" ones (w/ 3" stock). Instead, I glue some planks onto the sides to give me just a little more margin for error

Of course, that means I must make the added effort to build the material up ahead of time - I can't simply get on the lathe and go, I gotta do some planning...which is truly a challenge for impulsive folks like me... (Maybe that's why I can't get anything done )

So, when are you going to put those cones to good use?
