Hmm...the only angled-stripes roll pattern decal I can find is the one in the Snipe Hunter kit (see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/79cen012.html ). You said that the roll pattern decal in your 1965-vintage Javelin kit was made to fit the #10 body tube, and the angled-stripes roll pattern decal in this 1960s-vintage Micron kit (see: http://160.111.252.58/collections/a...id=A19930698000 ) also looks like it could wrap around a #10 body tube.

Yes that was it - but mine was black on clear

I'm not surprised--Centuri included the black-on-clear version of that decal in the Snipe Hunter kit, as this "Lunar Fleet" photograph (see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72cen012.html ) in the 1972 Centuri catalog shows. (Oddly, the catalog listing illustration for the Snipe Hunter in this same catalog [see: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72cen016.html ] shows the Snipe Hunter with a totally different roll pattern decal.) Centuri made several of their decals in both red and black (and sometimes blue) versions. Also, the two photographs of the Javelin in the 1972 Centuri catalog (see the "Lunar Fleet" photo above and the "Deluxe Starter Oufit" [http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72cen010.html ]) show another different paint-and-decals decor scheme on the rocket.

Quick question: Will the decals from one of those vintage kits still be usable? It looks alright—if not a little brittle. I've never tried to use a decal of that age before and I'm considering it.

Although I've never done it myself, I have read postings here on YORF by others who wrote (if memory serves) that spraying an old decal sheet with clear enamel or brushing it with some kind of "decal set" solution (the kind used to protect decals after they've been applied to plastic models) keeps the decals from breaking apart while they're being dipped in water and applied to model rockets.

Another thought--if your vintage decal sheet is one that Sandman at Excelsior Rocketry (see: www.excelsiorrocketry.com ) *doesn't* have in his "Classic Waterslide Decals" lines, you could e-mail him a PDF scan of the decal sheet (or lend him the decal sheet itself to scan) and buy a fresh reproduction of the decal sheet from him. This would make the reproduction decal sheets available to other model rocketeers, which would be a "Win!-Win!-Win!" situation for you, Sandman, and other model rocketeers who like to clone the old kits.

It would be really handy if he (or someone) did decals for scale models our size.

Foamy, was the helical checkerboard roll pattern decal in your 1969 Centuri Javelin kit (I'm guessing it had a balsa nose cone and *no* motor clip--later ones had a motor clip and a plastic nose cone) red or black? The reason why I ask is because Sandman's reproduction Centuri Black Widow decals (see: www.excelsiorrocketry.com -- see the Centuri decals list under "Classic Waterslide Decals") include a red helical checkerboard roll pattern decal, which is the same one shown in the NASM's Centuri Micron kit (see: http://160.111.252.58/collections/a...id=A19930698000 ). Therefore:

If your Javelin's helical checkerboard roll pattern decal was red (the one in Bazookadale's Javelin kit was black, as was/is the one in Centuri's and Semroc's Snipe Hunter kits), then we classic kit cloners have at least three choices for authentic reproduction Javelin decal schemes--the kit-specific straight-lines red roll pattern decal in Semroc's "Retro-Repro" Javelin kit, the black helical checkerboard roll pattern decal (for the "Retro-Repro" Snipe Hunter kit, the decal sheet for which Semroc also sells separately), and the red helical checkerboard roll pattern decal, which Sandman sells as part of the Centuri Black Widow decal set. (This doesn't include other Javelin decor schemes that appeared in Centuri catalogs, such as this one: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72cen010.html .)

Hi blackshire, the decal is black. The model has no motor clip, nor is one mentioned in the instructions. The nose cone is an odd vinyl-like plastic (it's kinda soft) and is orange with a black, hard plastic coupler(?).

A strange thing I noticed this morning—the paint on the nose cone is still tacky after about twelve hours of drying. The body and fins are quite hard and dry.

Since I have scanner software problems at the moment, I'll take the decal into work tomorrow and do a hi-res scan, or if he prefers, I'd be glad to send him the actual decal—just let me know.

If there are repros available or they can be made from this one, then I might just as well go that route. It's that or I'll try and paint it (or look for repro decals) as it appears on the kit card which, having thought about it, I kind of prefer. Thank you for the suggestions and advice.
