My brother used to ride GT BMX bicycles.
The other popular brands im my area during the 80's were Hutch, Red Line, Kuwahara, Powerlite, Robinson, Mongoose, and Diamondback. Never heard of Rampar.

Jay, I didn't use a font. I lifted the copy directly from the catalog page then cleaned it up in Photoshop.
Perhaps I should have phrased the wording in that first post as Centuri catalog 'text type'. It appears to be a variation of a font called Legothic Bold from the early seventies, but I am unable to find an exact match. Last edited by erik442 : 03-28-2021 at 08:11 PM. |

Rampar was the BMX division of Raleigh bicycles. I used to work at the neighborhood bike shop in the summers and it was primarily a Raleigh dealer. The local guys I raced with all rode the brands you mentioned, plus others like Torker, Skyway, Thruster, SE Racing, Patterson, and Dyno. I still have my Kuwahara hanging in the rafters of the garage. It's exactly as it was in 1985. Wish I could say the same for me! |

I remember both Raleigh and Skyway. Dunno how I missed Rampar.
What I do remember was how insanely priced Red Line bikes were compared to the others. It was easy to tell a kid's parents had $$$ if they rode a Red Line.

Agreed. They were also notorious for weld cracks. Something that shouldn't happen at that price level.

Yep, I remember that too about Red Line having frame crack repairs by the local weld shops.
For the price, they should have had entire replacements under warranty. Maybe they were warrantied, but the riders didn't want to hassle with the time factor. They should have just replaced the entire bikes for the ridiculous up front cost. The three brands nobody ever had trouble with were Mongoose, GT, and Hutch. Those were built like tanks.

These days I think the closest we can get is to approximate things, rather than get "an exact match," as you said. So back to your upscale Javelin: Did you use Semroc's "LT" heavy duty tubing, or something else? Inquiring minds want to know. Cheers and blessings, .

I used Estes Pro Series 2" tubing. I had bought some once to see how it compared to Semroc's LT-200 tube.
I really like the LT tube and was concerned it might become discontinued someday, so I was looking for a substitute. Turns out the Estes tube is 2" O.D. while the Semroc tube is 2" I.D. Wall thickness seemed comparable. After moving it around my bench for several years, I finally decided to use it so I built the Javelin. Both my AeroDarts are LT-200, as is the Centurion I'm currently building. |
