Default Primer/paint color combinations

Hello All,

The thread about Pinewood Derby car sanding sealer techniques reminded me about a primer & paint color compatibility chart (which primer colors work best with what paint colors) that I found online awhile back. Here it is:

A primer coat of paint may be applied which provides a proper surface for the final paint to stick to. The color of primer to use should be selected based on the final color of the rocket, so the primer color will not effect the final results of the painting job.

Major Color of Rocket............................Color of Primer to Use

Light (white, yellow, etc.)......................White
Medium (green, blue, orange, etc.)..........Gray
Dark (dark-blue, red, black, etc.).............Black

Once the primer has dried, sand off any dust marks or imperfections gently with 600 grit wet-dry sandpaper.

FWIW, I haven't found a white primer anywhere near as sandable as the light grey automotive primers, so I've gone the route of always using a sandable light grey primer (the higher the solvent content the better), and then for light to medium gloss colors, put a gloss white base coat.

I have had problems with "holidays" when using white paint over white primer.

I attribute this to snow blindness.
