I remember those days. In 1975-76 I was in the 8th grade. They tried to foist the metric system on us and I told my teacher that it would never fly. She laughed at me, so I guess I was wrong. It oughta be here any day now..........any day. As for "hocker", if they gave me a ball and a playground and an opportunity to fight over the rules, I'd have played it.

Food for thought on the metric system. Personally, I think it was SNL's skit on the 100 hour day which killed the movement.

Anyway, the American transition to metric was well underway until Reagan killed it. Not completely sure why, but the tool vendors all benefited - we (Americans) now all have both imperial and metric tools in our kits Used to, I looked at a nut or bolt head, and wondered if it was 7/16" or half inch. Now, I look at it and wonder if it's 7/16", half inch, 11mm, 12mm or 13mm. Which means I end up dragging out more than twice as many tools as I used to I've found, working with engineers around the world, that Americans and Brits are pretty comfortable working in both domains - we're bi-metric But most others were educated in only the metric system and thus struggle mightily with gallons, feet and pounds. Alas, seeing how my kids are being educated, they too will be mono-lingual when it comes to measurements. My 17yo daughter's physics class homework includes 0 imperial units. I'm not sure whether that's truly a handicap or not, but I feel that being able to work in both systems is to my benefit. Some of the stuff I work with has imperial units entrenched in it and thus will not be easy to change, so folks who can't handle both systems will suffer, I expect. ... Was reading a write-up on the web for an under-dash car repair. Guy claimed that the 6mm socket was too big and that the 5mm was too small, but if you went to the Ford dealer, they had a special 5.5mm socket that was just perfect for the application. Hmmm...isn't that called a 7/32"? Doug .

One of VERY FEW things that nit-witted old prune puppet Reagan got right was KILLING the metric system in the USA.
99% of the time he was in office he was a senile demented clueless twit. The only other things he got right was the massive increase in defense spending and the reduction in tax rates, of which should have stayed the same for the top 5%'ers as they NEVER EVER pay their fair share anyway. Should have gotten rid of ALL loopholes for the upper 5%'ers. There was zero reason for the USA to do what the rest of the world was doing. The rest needed to follow OUR lead. Reagan's replacement was probably the most intelligent president we have had since Eisenhower. Too bad none of that transferred to his son ! Actually launched a Clear Phantom ONCE....tube not so clear with a hideous sulphuric yellow haze and wrinkled upon landing. Flew fine though.
