Default Picture of Vern giving the talk

I was seated at the end of a table not too far from the speakers when they were giving their presentations. Here's a pic of Vern giving his talk.

That was awesome! My favorite part was when his Dad told the Buttinski that he'd rather have a dead boy than one who couldn't do anything.

It sounds cliche, but it really was better when Vern read it. If you know Vern, he can read the yellow pages and make them come to life.

I never knew how a bottling machine inspired Mable. Some of the early history of his boyhood and meeting Gleda was new to me. There is still a lot of "the story" untold by him and Gleda.

Years ago before I saw pictures of any motor making machine where I could tell what was going on, a company I was involved in developed an industrial machine to print on various sized spheres using inkjet. The engineer used an index table to move the spheres through the different steps (sometimes printing, but other times drying and hardening). As I was watching the development of the machine it dawned on me that this was probably the way Mabel worked. Sometime that same year I took a tour at the World of Coca-Cola when it was at Underground Atlanta, and saw a similar machine to what Vern showed in that presentation, and suddenly I realized how old that idea was!

He's saving it for future NARCON's, NSL's and NARAM's!

Besides flying those cool new Estes E16 and F15 motors in some of my rockets I did fly a few non-Estes motors.

My first rocket to be launched at any major event I attend is always an Initiator. I had the darnedest time trying to get the F20-4W motor to ignite and ended up replacing it with a F42-4T motor.

The Initiator shot off the pad and was gone into the Colorado sky. It was a good flight and I recovered the model.

I had built an Estes Pro Series II Nike Smoke and was looking forward to flying it in the wide open Colorado sky.

Powered by an Estes (AeroTech) G80-7T motor, the Nike Smoke lept off the pad and was certainly the highest flight I had at the NSL.

It was a bit of a walk to recover the model but it was fine with no damage.

What turned out to be my final flight of NSL 2013 was the launch of my North Coast Rocketry By Estes (NCRBE) Eliminator powered by a NCRBE F62-6 DarkStar motor. I used the motor under the rules for the NAR Discontinued Motor Program.

The motor ignited promptly and the rocket left the pad in a hurry.

A good, solid flight followed by a landing on an quad-runner, hitting the door to a porta-potty and then falling on gravel (Ouch). Other than some damage to the fins caused by the gravel the model was fine.
