Estes Interceptor Clone
Ok, ok ... as if I didn't have enough projects waiting for me on the table why did I have to start one more???
Well, with all this Interceptor new release hype and the fact that one is still waiting for me in the US somewhere I decided to start a clone. With this build I am particularly paying attention to a high degree quality finish. I must say I'm enjoying the build quiet a bit! Here is what I have done so far: Build status ... Comments are welcomed. Before I continue here 2 questions for the pros: - What glue do I use for Mike's castings? - Do I seal the balsa first before glueing the pods to the wings? (I would guess it makes sanding easier)

Nice, clean build so far Leo. Great job! I've never used Mike's parts before, but I have glued other resin parts to balsa and body tubes using thin CA, and with good results(Fake Wulf and OrionII come to mind). Resin cast parts are pretty tough.
I even used CA to glue the plastic pods on my new issue 1250 without any ill effects. As you know, you have to be careful with CA around plastics, but in these cases it worked out well. |

Leo,
Very nice job so far. I could identify with your comments on the resemblance to the F-104 Starfighter. I think I logged more miles on that plastic model than any other when I was a kid -- you know, running around the house and yard with it, shooting at everything in sight! I would recommend sealing the fins, but not the edges to be glued (root edge to body, and tip for pods). I did this for a recent build, and I used brush-on sanding sealer, so I could control it well. You want to allow glue to penetrate the balsa for a good grip, and the dealer will limit or prevent that. Once I glued the fins on, I filled the body tube spirals, and then then shot everything with primer.

Leo,
Beautiful work! I made a clone using Mike's parts a couple of years ago. I sealed and sanded all the balsa before attaching the wing pods; it made sanding a lot easier. I used 5 minute epoxy to attach the pods. There's a good strong bond. One pod did snap off on one landing, but it was with a lot of wind and I don't think anything would have kept the pod on. I did have to add nose weight with mine. Those resin fin pods add a lot of weight to the rear. I think I added at least one ounce. Drew |
