Default 11-02-09 Launch Pics

Launched a few more this afternoon. First up was the SEMROC Centurion staged with an A10-0 to B6-4, carrying the gum cam. I expected it to be a little too heavy for the A10/B6-4 combo and I was right. A B6-2 would have been better, but all's well that ends well. That's the Bertha's nosecone with the camera payload, btw.

Next was Kody's SEMROC Saturn 1B. We've flown it on a D12-3 and a cluster of C6-3's. Today we wanted to fly it on four B6's. I don't have a lot of B6-2's so we used two B6-2's and two B6-4's. I figured they would have near identical burn times, but you can see in the third image that two have already burned out. The fourth photo shows that the delay can spit out some serious burning bits too.

Last up was old Big Bertha again. This time I taped the gum cam on her side and dropped in a C6-5. I know it's similar to yesterday's photos, but I don't want the old girl to feel left out.

BTW, I have replaced my wallpaper. Out goes the Saturn with three C6's and in goes the same Saturn with 4 B6's. It's been rotated to look like it is heading downrange off Florida's coast. I also edited out the string that attaches the chute to the escape tower.

That's a good looking 1B.

How does the video look shooting out the side of the rocket instead of down?

It looks pretty decent. I need a dedicated payload section that will hang under its own chute without fins so it will be stable coming down. It'll make the average land lubber sea sick watching recovery portion. I'll try to chop off the useless portion of the video and post it here before long.

What's funny is that the flights seem to take much longer while standing on the ground watching. When you look at the videos, it's over almost before you start. Of course, I was using a little 12" chute on both of those rockets to try to get them back down in the same county. For some reason, it was calm most of the day, including when we were setting up the pads. The winds picked up considerably by the time we were ready to fly.

I didn't know there was a string on the escape tower. What is it for?

I've seen lately, some have a solid cone for launch and the tower is for display only. But after all these years, I've never actually seen a Saturn in person. ( I grew up on the poor side of the tracks)

We attach our parachutes to the tower with a string so that it will not land on the tower itself. I think that launching without the tower takes too much away from the aesthetics of the Saturns, so we launch with them on.

I'll try to get the vids on tonight if I get home in time. If not, tomorrow for sure. I'll have to get Kody to remind me.
