Rocket engine book from the 50's?????????
I'm and avid model rocket launcher. My dad who was born in 1942 keeps telling me of a book he had in the 50's on how to make rocket engines... And keeps wishing his mother my grandmother didn't take it away.. But after the Cicero FD came to the house twice to find a destroyed chemistry set and boy with no eyebrows and CATO craters around the yard it was confiscated... He keeps telling me how easy I have it because he couldn't buy rocket motors like I can.. In the old days after walking to school up hill both ways he had to read a BOOK and had to build the rocket and the motor. Thank GOD for NAR. So my question is does any one have any idea what this book was called or who wrote it??? I'd like to find him a copy and I'd actually check it out.. He cant remember what it was called......... he has been talking about this book since the 80's when he introduced me to model rockets it would be nice to find the name and author and try to find him one..
Thanks!!!! |

Brinley's Rocket Manual for Amateurs?
This was a mass-market paperback that could be found all over the place. It told you how to make zinc-sulfur motors, which were pretty effective but pretty dangerous to work with. It had a chapter on first aid . . . If you make motors this way, composites are the way to go. Much, much more efficient, and much safer to work with. PS Here is a scan of Brinley's book, online: http://www.rocketryplanet.com/conte.../#axzz1kUibnfyc |

I have this Yates book, and there's no how to build rocket engines in it. Mostly CO2 cartridge, pulse jet and jetex. HTH F=man's dad was 18 in 1960, the publication date for the Brinley book, so that's doubtful . Maybe it was George S. James'," Rocket Building for Modelers" from 1948? It shows a BP rocket and a simple zinc/sulfur rocket.?? There was also a 1958 version, Rocket Building for Students. Terry Dean

shockwaveriderz is right the book would have to be from the 50's or before...I tried calling him but he was born in the 40's so his cell phone is probably somewhere where he is not...
I remember him telling me he and his cousin had to heat the propellent mixture up on the stove depending on who's mom was not around.... its amazing he is still alive. Ill get more info from him tonight... |

That's probably common "candy" propellant. Sugar and KNO3.
