DOH! I completely forgot he started the thread! In my defense, I've been laid up on the couch with an acute relapse of mono, obviously including fever induced delusions. Yes, jnmiller, your new kit looks great! .

I second what's his nutz response in saying you did an outstanding job on your ML.
Now, did you do your homework and made the lower half removable to replace the rubber bands or did you replace the rubber bands with steel springs?

Hi DL
I gave both options much consideration. I studied Jeffy Jeep's build thread regarding making the ML serviceable. In the end I decided to take the gamble and build without modifications and just with Semroc's rubber bands. I noticed they include 2 bands for each leg, I assume the redundancy will make it last longer than the old Estes.. time will tell! I'm considering building Tango Papa's upscale version someday.. I think that one is serviceable. I saw it at a launch last year, looked really nice! -Jeff M

Jeff, when packing the bands in the bags, I counted the required number then added extras for the "just in case anything can go wrong" situations. Enjoy your build. Sheryl |

I never had the Estes Mars Lander, but have built and flown the Semroc version. An excellent flier on a D13 reload in the 18/20 RMS. It’s one of my all-time favorite builds, right up there with the Orbital Transport.
I had a chute fail to fully open, and the resulting hard landing cracked the dowel that fits into the clear tubing “flex coupler”. But it’s fairly easy to repair. I built mine with screws holding the aft cover in place. I did have to cut an “access hatch” to do the repair, but I won’t even need to cover it up when the aft cover is re-attached.

The Mars Lander is my all time favorite Estes/Semroc kit.
A very fun build and fun to fly as well. Wish I could still get my favorite motor for it....the long OOP 18mm Cox D8-3. At 13n-sec it is perfect for a decent altitude flight. Estes no longer makes a decent motor for it. The C5-3 was good, but the C6-3 is woefully low on thrust for anything but windless conditions.
