I routinely fly my 24mm Super Alpha on Estes D12's.

It all started when I opened the package and discovered the hardest, heaviest balsa nose cone I'd ever seen. The rest is history.

For some reason I've never launched it with an Alt 1 or Alt 2 on board. Reasons unknown. Perhaps I will correct that oversight at this weekend's launch.

Attached is an image taken just after ignition. A flying buddy snapped this photo as I never catch the lift-off with my camera.

FWIW, the old Holverson Tangent was sort of the original Super Alpha. It used a BT-60 airframe, had similarly shaped fins, and a sort-of ogive cone.

And, like Craig, et al, I modified mine for more power. I also made upside-down looking fins for it in honor of all those Alphas of yore that had theirs on upside down In this case, not only can it fly on 24mm motors, but it can fly on 3x18, too, along with some others. Doug .

My SA is now complete, having "located" and "confiscated" an E-clip that was not being "used" elsewhere...

I also grabbed a 3/16" launch lug from the stash pile and used that instead of the stock 1/8" lug. All it needs is a coat of primer...

Are those PanaVise heads holding the launch rods?

Bill,

I saw some similar vises at Fry's - ie, repair bench vises for small parts - which looked to me like they'd make good rod swivels.

That said, I have one from Mike Calhoun I got several years ago - just like the DARS heads - that I've never used. So I really need to resist the temptation of adding yet another widget to my pile of unused schtuff

Yes, they are. The launch rods are inserted into a 5/8" steel rod about 6" long and welded into place. The standard Panavise bases take a 5/8" spindle so it's all good.

Our club is mostly converted to rail buttons but we do have three small high-power launch pads that consist of a metal tripod topped with a Panavise base and we can chose from 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" launch rods.

All things considered, the Panavise base is an economical way to put together a launchpad for LPR, MPR, and small HPR. Amazon sells the PV base for about $22. Can't go wrong there.
