How about a Rheinbote? This four-stage artillery rocket was an ancestor (although not directly) of the Honest John, able to hurl an 88-pound warhead up to 140 miles, and some stages could be removed for shorter-range shots (see: http://www.google.com/search?source...0.G tEvwp6xWac ).

That thing is to simple looking. Kind of like a Super Roc model with some extra fins added as you get to the nose.

'Tis no accounting for tastes (but it has never been one of my aesthetic favorites, either; my main interest in the Rheinbote is that it showed that high-performance solid propellant rockets were possible). Had more of them been left after the end of the war, they might have been used as early sounding rockets.
