There already was a war between Michigan and Ohio (1835-36) over that stretch of land containing Toledo. Militias were raised, shots were fired (no one was wounded or killed though) Then the Michigan people slunk home with their tails between their legs and Ohio kept Toledo.

So there is an even older reason than football for the rivalry, but for the most part we're willing to let it all go except during football season. I suspect even GH wouldn't bother wasting the lead it took to shot an Ohioian (if he could even hit one).

They ARE delivered in a Yosemite Sam/Buzz Buzzard Combo-voice.

You folks just have your hearing-aids set too low !

Estes just sent their entire remaining useless shipment of "The Dude" to random Ohio locations. Sounds like a good location for them.

See what you started Blackshire? Ask an innocent question
about kit pricing and 82 posts later we're on the verge of a Civil War.
Maybe someone we know could buy up the remaining inventory and
reintroduce them as "Sheri's Hot Dudes". She could replace that
red plastic nose weight doohickey with a giant latex ...... oh, never mind.

It seems that a quick history lesson is called for here.

The dispute was settled by Federal intervention, not by the two parties. At the time, Ohio was a state, but Michigan was still just a territory, and it's single non-voting delegate didn't have any clout in Washington. President Andrew Jackson regarded electoral success in Ohio as key to enhancing the prospects of his fledgling Democratic party. Michigan's militia along the border had to be pulled back eventually because the territory was running out of money, while at the same time Ohio, as a state, was about to receive a share of a Federal budget surplus. A territory had little chance of success challenging the sovereignty of a state, but Michigan Territory managed to stymie both state and Federal governments and keep the issue alive for over a year, until a settlement of the conflict was negotiated. The dispute was eventually settled when, in exchange for being admitted as a state, Michigan ceded the Toledo Strip to Ohio. Also, as compensation for giving up its claim to the 428 square miles, Michigan was granted the western three quarters of the Upper Peninsula, a much larger amount of territory. The economic value of the Toledo Strip subsequently declined with the arrival of the railroad, and the key port on the western end of Lake Erie shifted from Toledo to Detroit. Meanwhile, the value of the UP soared with the discovery of vast deposits of iron and copper in the 1840s. The mining was an incredible boon to Michigan's economy that lasted well into the 20th century. So thank you, Ohio!

In an effort to allow this thread to die a dignified death and hopefully not be resurrected again, I shall defer to this lopsided post and will remain silent. Except for one thing, you are absolutely correct in your statement that the upper peninsula was a financial boon to that state. Now if we could only get all Michiganners to move up there and keep the stench far away from our sweet border. "With God all things are possible".

I long ago realized that I could never fully understand the two-leggers--just having this form temporarily isn't enough to do so. The many things you all fight about--even kill each other over, individually as well as in groups--bewilder me. And the apparently constant human desire for sexual gratification (humans can face each other during sex, which I suppose might serve to intensify the appetite for it) makes me thankful that equine females aren't in a state of arousal anywhere near as often. (And no, I have not engaged in such activity in this form, as tempting as it would be, because it would entail physical as well as legal hazards...) I don't criticize those above-mentioned human traits; I simply note their differences from equine ones. Properly channeled and utilized, those human urges, along with human intelligence (which is prodigious, despite what some misanthropes say) made possible this modern technological world that we all enjoy and benefit from.
