ASTRE: NAR section 471 vintage motor launch
Hi Gang!!
Last Sunday, our local NAR section participated in the NAR's de-certified motor testing program. As a collector of OOP rocket motors, I could not let this pass by..... I figured, hey... what to fly old motors in? .....Old rockets of course! I spent last week re-habbing the shock chords and chutes on all of my vintage built-up rockets. I then dug through my old motors and picked a number that I have a bunch of and submitted those for testing approval. Between myself and three other club members, we had quite a selection of motors. I had a blast and flew the below rockets: ESTES: Mars Snooper on a C6-5 Mark II on a Centuri 1/2A6-2 Sprint clone on a Canaroc B4-6! Star Blazer on a shorty A5-2s motor Streak on a 1/2A6-2. And yes in the fine tradition of this model, I lost it Wac Corporal on an A5-2 (Thanks Jeff!) Scout clone on a Centuri 1/2A6-2 (and yes, it broke a leg!) Centuri: Orion on a C5-3 Skylab on B6-4 Star Trooper on a 1/4A4-4M Mini Dactyl clone on a A4-2M (Red Baron) Plan: Tri-Fo saucer: MPC B6-0, C6-0, ESTES B8-0 and B14-0 ! It was a great launch, and I only got a chance to fly perhaps half of the models I brought. We are already talking about another round if the NAR will approve!! Phred

How did the OOP motors perform that you and others launched?

Most motors performed well. All that I brought worked fine. The B8-0 that I borrowed from a club member catoed in the saucer with no damage. It blew right out the top.
I only brought motors that I believed would not Cato. In fact, I borrowed a Centuri 1/4A4-4M as mine were iffy. (swollen) Other motors flown by other flyers catoed: including FSI B3-6, and an old Rocketflite 38mm BP F-25. Unusually, another member had two ESTES E9-P catos, and the third worked perfectly! The Scout flew well and tumbled wonderfully. The leg broke. on landing, which happens all of the time with this model. Phred

You've obviously had better luck with C5-3's than I have. The few that I bought from Centuri worked fine, but once I started buying them from Estes, over half of them CATO'd. That's pretty interesting considering they came out of the same machines. |

Yeah, I was worried about a cato, esp as I was flying a very early, built up Centuri Orion.
One of my section members brought a 3 pack of C5-3s, and the first two he flew worked perfectly, soI figured I had a pretty good chance of the same. Phred
