Default OK, this is jusr stupid!

My Jet mini lathe needs a new motor.

The motor is between (i checked a few web sites) between $197.00 and $238.00 plus shipping.

I went to Harbor Freight and purchased a new mini lathe.
It is absolutely identical to my Jet mini lathe and came to$186.00 including sales tax...so out the door.

By the way...Harbor Freight does not have the motor available separately.

Sorry, I just had to vent this stupidity.

I'm sure I can eventually find a motor that will fit.

If anybody has a line on a motor with these specs;

110 volt
0.58" shaft (15mm)
1/2 HP or higher
About 8" overall length

Let me know.

I'd hate to just throw it away.

I don't understand why companies do that.

Maybe (probably) it's just greed.

A long time ago I wanted to repair my vacuum cleaner motor. I went to a vacuum cleaner repair shop (try to find one of those now!) to get a bearing.

The very very old gentleman that ran the place was digging around the shop for the part. Now this guy was OLD he could barely walk. He took really short steps, sort of like one of the characters that Tim Conway did on the old Carol Burnett Show.

He couldn't find them but then he says, "Wait a second...Hey Dad! where are the bearings for...
His Dad!!!!

Those places are all but gone now.

I've been telling people that about the Jet, Grizzly*, and HF 12x36 variable speed lathe for years. They even had the same casting marks when I bought my HF version! Nobody ever believes me, though. IIRC, each company printed slightly different specs, most likely to keep people from realizing they are the same machine as the HF with more expensive paint.

*I don't think Grizzly sells the 12x36 anymore.

Harbor Freight use to sell an Identical lathe (again except for the label) as Sears.
The great thing was that Sears had a bunch of accessories that fit my lathe.

OK, it was a piece of doggy dodo but I think it was like $99.00.

Jet sent me a run capacitor...for $22.00!

That fixed it.

But after using the HF mini lathe my Jet looked a little shabby after 12 years.
Let's face it cast iron isn't the best surface to hold paint.

I thought for sure I had some beige paint but alas...all I had was green.

So now my Jet lathe matches the Harbor Freight lathe.

I'll take pictures after another few light coats of green and I pull the masking tape off.

That crappy old Harbor Freight lathe I bought foe $99 is going in a garage sale.

Here's the old Jet lathe repainted green. It "almost" matches the new Harbor Freight model.

The Jet has the extra bed extension.

It now looks shiny and new.

For now.

Spec out that capacitor and shop around for a cheaper one if it happens again. I had one go bad on one of my HVAC units that cost me nearly $40. When the other one went out I found it for $12 on eBay. Same brand even

Yeh, I though of that. I have hundreds of capacitors left from my business but none that large.

I was just lazy.
