I received an e-mail from the owner of Sunward requesting that all the sunward plans be removed from the site. These will be removed this weekend.

If companies were DISallowed from owning IP even by employee inventors, I might feel different.
I'd like to see a law giving IP ownership to inventors IN PERPETUITY no matter who they work for.
Guarantees the money would go where it belongs, not with someone just moving piles of cash around.

Default Sunward Kits

I, too, purchased a bunch of the Sunward original designs. I enjoy the fact that they're (for the most part) a little more that just 3FNC birds.

That having been said, when they hit the workbench, I will be doing a completely different livery. While the designs are nice, the paint scheme/decals (or lack thereof) makes them a little too plain for my liking. It'll be fun to jazz them up a bit...which is also a great part of this hobby!

As far as the intellectual property thing goes...I get it. I support it. But I think we should also consider that, should a vendor decide to no longer market (and therefore, profit from) their IP, it should be able to become part of public domain, or at least a public archive. I agree that the original IP owner retains rights and at any time should be able to change their mind and reenter the marketplace (at which point the IP should be blocked).

I have an extensive collection of rockets that includes many, many defunct manufacturers. It is a shame that they have fallen by the wayside for one reason or another. Although I'm happy to have located a copy of many of their designs, it saddens me that so many beautiful designs can no longer be sourced for my fellow rocketeers, except through cloning from plans from sites like JimZ's. When eventually Sunward throws in the towel on their kits, I do hope that the efforts that went into their kits find their way into an archive for future builders to build and enjoy.

LOL... so what you're saying here is, "I get it, I support it, but I don't."

This has always been done in the past. If a manufacturer requests a plan being removed from an archival platform like JinZ, it's been done. Of course, the thought behind this has been that the manufacturer intends to produce that kit again and having the plans and parts list posted might cut into those sales. With that said, there are probably LOTS of people with those plans already sitting on their computers. So, if someone REALLY wanted to do a clone (why, I don't know....it's usually cheaper to buy the kit), the plans are available. You just gotta ask the right person

Can't argue, Wolf. I do understand and if it was my website or archive, I would honor the IP owner's wishes.

Doesn't mean I wish it were so, though...
