Some photos of project progress:

Booster, showing slot for mounting the booster pod, and vent for using staging gas to (hopefully) deploy streamers in pods.

Modified cones for pods.

Sustainer, with replacement wing-like fins I got from Frank Burke:

The pods will go on after painting. The mating surfaces and TTW tabs are taped off.

yeah, that's why I suggested to make a tab and then slot and CA the pod in place...
hopefully you have a good solution.

I wondering if staging gasses would be enough to pop a parachute out of a side pod, given vent holes.

I'm planning on finishing the side pods separately; I'll put a strip of 1/4" masking tape down the mating edges of the pods and the booster body. Strip those off to reveal naked body tube suitable for gluing together.

Adding a tab would have meant making new fins, and cutting a neat slot in hard plastic.

If the fin tip mated to the little span of body tube, rather than one of the pod's cones, I might have tried.

Fingers crossed, the retrofitted recovery system will provide a slow decent.

The model will sit "in primer" until I get back from visiting family back east. So I have primer sanding to look forward to. Ecccchh!

You could have just cut a bit off the tip to make the tab, it would be marginally shorter, and I use a dremel for my slot cutting, but in any case, water under the bridge

'That booster has plenty of finnage, so losing a 3/8" of span to make a tab would have worked.

For that matter, losing another 1/4" of span on each fin to create TTW tabs would have been an option.

But sometimes you just want to build the sucker.

I'd forgotten I had this thread to track progress on my Renegade-D Retro-Conversion and upgrade.

I finished the model more or less as shown on the cover. I hit it with matte spray for a stealth-look.

I finally flew it yesterday, at the Fillibe's Folly launch in Sheridan, OR. D12-0 to B6-6. I used the mid-power rack so there would be more distance between model and crowd, and called it a "heads up" flight. My concern was that the ejecting booster pod cones or shock cords would catch on the sustainer fins. In any case, there was that heavy, heavy booster.

No need to worry! It had a really straight boost, and both of the streamers deployed! The booster landed safely not far from the launch racks. I had a bit of a walk to retrieve the booster; I could have gotten a good flight from a A8-5 I suspect.

So . . . if you have a Renegade-D, this is a proven mod.

The only failure yesterday; the shock cord on my old (14 years or so) Aero-Tech Mk. II, as seen in the Centuri 1964 catalog failed. The main body tube core sampled. Not sure if I want to bother rebuilding it. So many other projects to build!

A very nice result, Stefan. The matte finish is a great look for the model.

Nice job. The different sustainer fins give it a different look.

I have still to launch my retrofitted to 24mm version..

Stefan- Aero-Tech mk 2 ????
Is this actually an Aero-DART mk 2 you are speaking of ?
Never heard of any Centuri Aero-Tech mk-anything.

Yes, Aero-DART. I'm getting foggy in my dotage.
