Enerjet 1340 - ever used as an actual sounding rocket?
I've been searching for info on the Enerjet sounding rockets....and haven't yet found any info on their actual use for any of the applications that the brochure suggests (pollution sampling, cloud seeding, etc., etc.).
Does anyone know of any info on actual applications vs. demos at NARAM-14 or all the lovely clones flown for fun here and elsewhere?

You could ask Lee Piester at NARCON in a few weeks.

One of the Enerjet brochures I read at some point in the past gives a partial list of 'clients' and mentions some names like the Air Force, Atomic Energy Commission (forerunner of the current Department of Energy), and seems like there were one or two other private companies listed as well (Lockheed maybe?). But yes, as Bob Sanford alluded, Lee would probably be one of the best sources to ask. Larry Brown, former Centuri/Enerjet staffer would be a GREAT source of info, if someone has any contact info for him. Seems last I recall someone saying he lived in the northeast somewhere now. Earl

My guess is either no or very rarely. Electronics were the domain of the rich or professional back then. Those folks typically had access to surplus military rockets with much higher performance. It was a product before its time.

That's kind of what my inability (so far) to turn up anything about it other than from a modeling point of view seems to indicate. I'd love to see at least one writeup or picture of one being used to lay a line or carry a radiometer or something in a non-hobby application context.

Back then one could get Composite Dynamics (1), Plasmajet, Crown/SSRS barely started, and of course Irv Wait's company so long as you didn't compete with Enerjet. One FX deal I did used Irv Wait motors. Oh, and Internal Ballistics and Vulcan. Just Jerry Vulcan 75mm J1000 Last edited by Jerry Irvine : 02-09-2015 at 07:34 PM. |

Interestingly many of the earliest motor companies that would now be considered HPR, were centered around Anaheim Stadium and Lucerne Dry Lake.
Plasmajet - reference motor 29mm I, also H's Composite Dynamics (1) - Reference motor 29mm H140 Composite Distribution - Reference motor 95mm M and N Internal Ballistics -reference motors 38mm I69, I200, 54mm K675, L750 Firms who later became motor makers related to these sites: U.S. Rockets (1978-92) Aerotech (1980-2001) Composite Dynamics (2) (1971-75) Composite Distribution SU motors marketed as USR: Images of IBCo I200 38mm Last edited by Jerry Irvine : 02-10-2015 at 10:32 AM. |

The EnerJet 1340 brochure mentions temperature inversion recording in the brochure scans that Chris Timm provided to YORP http://www.oldrocketplans.com/enerj...340/enj1340.htm When I first started searching for information on the 1340 someone [SEL, Taras, Chris Timm ?] sorry but I don't recall who referred me to an article by John Langford in the March 1974 MR "Sounding Off About Temperature Inversions". This article states that EnerJet provided 1340 sounding rockets and Estes provided the Transroc transmitters for soundings. Also, an Estes 950 sounding rocket was used for D12-5 using a plastic fin unit for lower altitude flights. The .pdf I have is too large to post but if anyone is interested PM me and I'll email it to you. I saved the pages from the .pdf to .jpg images and incuded those here. I have in the meantime purchased the MR Magazine CD MRM-1 from the NAR with all February 1972 thru December 1979 issues but these scans that made up the .pdf from that issue that I was sent are much clearer than the scans on the NARTS disc. I wish I could remember who to thank for that! It is a very interesting read and there are line diagrams of the 1340 and 950 in the article. Would be really cool if someone could ask Lee Piester more about this at NARCON as well as the 1967 Centuri AEC Two Stage Rocket that was featured in the EnerJet News Aug., 1972 No. 2 [I built my version of that and documented some of that here and still fly this at local launches]. http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showthread.php?t=10308 .
