Default Rocketry Inventions

I've been searching around for a collection of rocketry patents, but have come up dry. So, why not gather 'em up in this thread?

Patents can be recalled and viewed on demand, free of charge, at the U.S. Patent office website. I've found these things to be very interesting viewing and reading.

Here is a list of patents that I've collected that describe some important rocketry inventions:

First, the patent that marks the beginning of model rocketry:

2,841,084 July 1, 1958 Orville H. Carlisle - Toy rocket (the Rock-a-chute)

There were some earlier patents that approached Orvilles work. Here's a rocket with parachute that uses propulsion disks and felt discs for wadding:

2,442,528 June 1, 1948 John O. Beatty - Rocket with ejecting parachute

Here's a patent for the paper shock cord mount:

3,646,887 March 7, 1972 George H. Stine - Paper shock cord mount

Here's the Centuri-style baffle patent:

3,719,145 March 6, 1973 Lawrence W. Brown & Leroy E. Piester - Recovery Device Baffle System for Miniature Rockets

Here's the metal mesh baffle patent:

5,054,397 October 8, 1991 Paul C. Hans & Gary C. Rosenfeld - Parachute ejection & recovery system for rockets

Kinda interesting how late the paper shock cord mount patent was registered, eh?

That's a great list, Dwayne. Hopefully others know of some patents that they can add to this list.

From the 1967 catalogue:

Space Plane: Pat#3157960

Falcon, Scout, Sprite: Pat #3114317 (The # for the Falcon may be a misprint as the patent
appears to cover tumble recovery only).

Apogee II, Farside, Delta: Pat #3292302

From the 1968 Catalogue:

Nighthawk: Pat #3452471

Surprisingly, only a 'Patent Pending' for the Camroc, and nothing for the Cineroc.

Most excellent, Sean! Thank you.

From having a look at the patents you've listed...

3,114,317 December 17, 1963 Vernon D. Estes - Model Rocket (with tumble recovery)

and

3,292,302 December 20, 1964 Vernon D. Estes, William M Simon - Multistage Model Rocket

... and then there are the Space Plane and Nighthawk Patents that start a whole series of glider patents. I'll post a rocket-boosted glider patent list that will include those.

Default Rocket Glider patents (RBG,RG,etc.)

Following the Glider patents that Sean listed, here's a collection of Rocket-Glider related patents:

3,157,960 November 24, 1964 John F. Schutz & Vernon P. Estes - Model Rocket Glider (Rear-Engine Boost Glider... Estes Astron Space Plane)

3,408,767 November 5, 1968 Gordon H. Anderson - Toy airplane with folding wings having tabs (precursor to Swing-Wing Boost Gliders)

3,452,471 July 1, 1969 Gene J. Street - Model Boost Glider (FBG with pop pod. Estes Nighthawk, Sky Dart)

3,888,178 June 10, 1975 Walter E. Senoski - Model Rocket Glider (using ducted exhaust to push a piston to release elevator hold-downs. Kopter Pterasaur and Moray)

3,943,441 March 9, 1976 Walter E. Senoski - Model Rocket Glider (ejects nose cone, slides a replacement nose cone forward, and raises elevator. Kopter Jet-i-Son)

There are probably some important patents missing here. Some unrepresented inventions include Front-Engine Boost Gliders, other rocket gliders, scissor-wing boost gliders, regallo boost gliders, sliding-wing rocket gliders, radio-controller rocket gliders.

If anyone out there can fill in any rocketry-related glider patents, could you please list them or where they are cited?

Found the Camroc patent in the 1971 catalogue, #3537369.

Default Inventions using model rockets

For a change of pace, here are a couple of inventions that make unconventional use of model rockets. These definitely violate model rocketry safety codes! Definitely not for casual hobbyists.

3,787,013 September 3, 1972 James H McKenzie Sr. - Foldable Kite and Rocket - launches a kite with a rocket, and the rocket reels out the kite string.

4,653,379 March 31, 1987 Louis Barret & Andre Eybert-Berard - Use of a model rocket to trigger lightning flashes - The model rocket reels out a ground line.
